Five stars for: Tasty and unusual food Friendly people Good outdoor deck in summer It's casual...and where else you gonna find a DELICIOUS caribou burger?? I tried it during a long layover at the Fairbanks airport. A cab will get you here quickly.

Best Burger in town!!! They use Indian Valley meat products. Take home some Caribou steaks or reindeer sausage for the grill

The look inside was all right. I only craved and cared for a reindeer dog and good thing that was good.

Good hot Alaskan Burgers, Caribou steaks, and Buffalo Burgers. If you are looking for a great burger from a mom and pop shop this is a great destination for you to visit. It is a clean, laidback, and fun atmosphere. I ordered the signature burger (a mix of buffalo, pork, and beef patty) with pepperjack cheese. It came hot with flaky fries: overall was on point. Great customer service and a large variety of burger toppings. I recommend giving it a try, and get the housemade honey mustard.

Gets 4 stars because it is definitely authentic for Alaska. Got the Buffalo burger and can understand why we hunted them to near extinction. However buffalo isn't terribly different than regular beef. The Honey Mustard made by the owner was also very good. Good choice of fixin's. Ambiance was kind of standard, a few moose items. The Winter Ox jerky I was not impressed with and was a waste of $2. It tastes just like beef, which is the main ingredient. The Venison jerky was good though. Still mostly beef. I will still come back to try the caribou steak however. They should consider having multiple different meats in a sampler tray to "Taste Alaska"

The Buffalo burger with Bacon is delicious and filling! The fries are delicious as well, and we're always full and happy when we leave. The staff is always welcoming and very friendly. We always feel comfortable and happy when we visit! The prices are great as well, and they never skimp. The packaged sausages and honey mustard are well worth buying and trying. A wonderful cafe that I would recommend to anyone and will continue to visit & enjoy in the future!

Looking for a place to find a variety of gamey meats? If in Fairbanks Alaska, look no further, where you can find a plethora of jerkys and meats. Cooked meals available from buffalo burger, caribou sandwich, buffalo bratwurst, and more. If you are from out of town and looking for some uniqueness, try this place out.

Even though I only had the black bean burger, they get 4 stars from me for: a) even having something a vegetarian can eat ( even though it's the frozen kind, it was tasty - and they have a whole wheat bun option that was toasted and yummy) and b) the place is clean and lots of happy lookin meat eatin folks around.

Came here for lunch today - very impressed with the burger, the service, and the place itself. Ordered the Buffalo burger (~$8) add bacon and pepper-jack chz with sweet pot fries.. and, just to be evil, got the mixed berry shake: - buffalo burger patty was huge, moist, cooked well, seasoned well - very tasty - bacon was thick, fresh, and delicious - sweet pot fries were lightly fried and tasty - shake was huge and very berryful and yummy (I barely drank a quarter of it.. it was thick and too big for me) The gals that worked there were very chipper, up-beat, friendly and quick; The place was kept very clean (even the bathroom) and well-tended to; they stocked lots of local reindeer, elk, buffalo meat and local-made goodies. For what this place means to be: a local-centric burger/hot-dog joint, this is a great find! I would totally come back!

Occasionally my fellow Yelpers do me wrong. Loose Moose Café marks one of the few times I questioned the sanity of my fellow Yelpers. After the 7 hour drive from Anchorage, we were ravenous upon our arrival in town on Christmas Eve Day. I'm unfamiliar with Fairbanks, so I figured I'd look on Yelp find a place with a high rating that was actually open, and seek it out. The location of this place should have been enough to make me give up. Even though its on Airport Road, you can't actually access it from that road. You have to go way out of your way to access what is essentially the back driveway to the "Café." And oh yes, I put the word café in air quotes, cause their ain't a damn thing café-y about this joint. This place is a dive. Mind you, I like dives sometimes, especially when they're authentic, cheap and tasty. This place was none of those things. There was no old skool Americana-greasy spoon charm here. Nor was the food tasty or inexpensive/ Capital BLECH!!! Ambiance is crapola. But I can deal with crappy ambiance if the food is slammin. But for the love of gawd, noooooooo, my reindeer burger was something out of a nightmare. First off, since when is a "burger" shaped long ways and placed on a 6 inch roll. WTF? But this I could forgive if it was tasty. But it's not. It has the worst texture I've even had in a burger. It kinda had the texture of sausage actually. But the taste was nauseating. I mean literally, there I was RAVENOUS and I couldn't even choke it down. I love reindeer burgers. I drive 3 hours on a whim to Talkeentna just for a good reindeer burger often. But this, NO THANK YOU. BLECH!!! So I stared at my sad looking, 10+ dollar uneaten reindeer "burger" in this gross little "café" and tried to choke down the greasy sweet potato fries. They too made me nauseas, so I just quit eating altogether. My honey rated his burger ok and his chili excellent. But he too was really put off by the ambiance and prices. N.E.V.E.R. A.G.A.I.N. Capital AVOID THIS PLACE Exclamation Point!!!

Classic burger. Fun toppings and friendly service. If I'm ever back in the area, I will be returning. Got the signature burger, fries and chicken sandwich. All fantastic and filling. Service was very friendly and polite.

Casual, "order at the counter" place with reasonable prices and a variety of unique meat choices. The reindeer polish dog and caribou steak patty were both amazing. I also had the bison chili which was tasty with large chunks of buffalo meat. The service was quick and staff was cheerful and polite. The cafe' also sells most of their meats frozen for home cooking and has a selection of jerky, and condiments to buy for home. I will be coming back for sure!

I was recommended and taken to this place by one of the cab drivers. I'm so glad I went. I wanted to go to a place I could get some local fair and meat. The menu of this cafe has some good local meat, caribou, reindeer, etc. The lady behind the register and in the kitchen are absolute darlings. They were nice, patient, and very helpful. I also managed to buy some caribou and reindeer sausage to bring home and some canned salmon and reindeer meat. They also have sweet mustard and other things that make good souvenirs. Adjacent to the cafe is a bar that is good too. Only that it is a smoking bar. I highly recommend this place and would love to come back.

With all of the great reviews, we couldn't wait to try a burger at the Loose Moose Cafe. The woman behind the counter was very nice, informative and patient with us while we tried to decide what to get. My partner decided to get the Signature Burger which is a combination of beef, pork and buffalo. There is no cheddar cheese choice so she got american cheese which was the least foul to her from the choices of american, swiss and pepper jack. I got the buffalo burger with sautéed mushrooms and swiss with a side of sweet potato fries whereas my partner got the regular fries. I loved my burger. I've always liked buffalo as a substitute for beef. It was a bit dry but the mushrooms really helped to give it some extra moisture and the swiss cheese was dripping off of it. I added some horseradish mayo for a little kick. I really liked it and the fries were crisp and yummy. My partner, however, hated her burger. I could tell right away from the look and smell of the burger that it wasn't good. It had the consistency of meatloaf, probably from the combination of meats but also had some sort of spice in it that made it quite pungent. She barely ate half it but finished her fries. And because I put horseradish on my burger, she wouldn't share it with me. She's certain she doesn't want to return to the Loose Moose Cafe but I'm urging her to try other items on the menu since my burger was so good.

I had the 'signature' burger, added grilled onions and a side of fries. 5 stars if they had some homemade buns instead of the standard grocery store ones. I will be back again to try the jalapeño burger once I wake up from this nap.

  • Yang L.

Very delicious food here. I really like their sauce bar where they have everything including banana pepper and jalapeño. We tried their buffalo burger and steak Alaska. They are both good.

Okay, if you like the order at the counter kind of places you may give this a 5 star. The food was great and the people working there were also great. I wasn't crazy about having to put my own tomatoes, onions, and condiments on my Caribou burger as when these things are out where EVERYONE can get their fingers in them I'm skeptical. The burger was good and the sweet potato fries are wonderful with the honey mustard. Prices are reasonable and they even have caned reindeer you can take home for Christmas presents. I will be back to try some of the other meats you just can't get any place else.

It's pretty cool to eat at local businesses and I dodge chains as best I can but especially when I'm traveling. The Loose Moose Cafe is nothing to brag about from the outside but they have frozen meat items to purchase and I'm sure they are good. I stocked up on ready to eat Hot & Spicy Reindeer Summer Sausages and Caribou Sausages that could pack in my suitcase. The sandwiches were all right. - Fresh fried halibut sandwich = square fish! - Bison hot dog = pretty good - Buffalo burger = big size - Caribou sandwich = flat sausage like patty with onions They have soups and milk shakes too!

For the tourists looking to check off "something local" or "game meat" from their Alaskan adventures checklist, this is the spot for you. But gourmet burgers this certainly isn't. This is definitely one of those hole in the wall burger joints that can make tourists feel like locals just for stepping foot in it, although I get a feeling that locals would scoff at this place. The food is middling at best and it's obvious that their target clientele are tourists looking for "local" food. Hey, it works. I went here after all. I tried the caribou sandwich and the buffalo patty burger. If it weren't for the kitsch factor of getting to say that I've now eaten buffalo and caribou while in Alaska, this place would get 3 stars. However, given that I'm a tourist after all and couldn't easily find another place that would make me feel like an Alaskan adventurer without having to shoot the game myself, this place gets that extra star. Oh, and they have packaged reindeer, buffalo, and caribou meats that you can send or bring back to the folks at home to show them how much of an Alaskan adventurer you were.

In town for a few days and wanted something local and one of a kind. The menu has burgers and dogs but they're made of reindeer, caribou and buffalo. I didn't mind the mom and pop appearance of the place. I think it was very homey and relaxed atmosphere with free WiFi! I personally loved the reindeer polish sausage. I topped it with horseradish and ketchup. They even have a freeze full of packages of the sausages of different varieties to buy and take home. Ooh and they also have common menu items such as beef hamburgers and chicken sandwichs for those not so daring.if sufficiently go back if I'm ever back up this way.

I was pretty pumped to try out Loose Moose... and then we stepped inside. We were not really feeling the look of the place at all. The food, which is the most important aspect of any restaurant or "cafe".... While I'm on the subject, "Cafe" is the last word I would use to describe this place. A cafe consists of a light menu, drinks, and most likely coffee and teas. The chili was not ready when we got there (around noon-thirty), and the condiment bar was a sad sight to behold. Onions were sparse and dry, the lettuce was not fresh and my Black Bean burger patty tasted and looked like it was pre packaged and defrosted. Positives: The bathroom was very clean, the young girl behind the counter was very friendly and the fries are good. Well I don't know what else to say, I'm sad my experience wasn't as fabulous as the other reviewers but to each their own. This Loose Moose is just not for me.

Dropped $55 on two adult and kids meals. Holy gross food batman. Not to mention the intense smell of smoking floating around the restaurant. I mean, someone from the staff must have been literally smoking indoors. It was very rude. Save yourself some coin and hit up a cheaper, yummier burger joint. The buffalo chili= gross, the "specialty burger" was especially gross... the reindeet sausage hotdog was the only ok dish. Avoid Avoid Avoid!

I didn't eat here, so my personal input is limited. We were looking for a place with Reindeer sausage, and were exploring a rumor. This place had plenty of meat product. Sausages, jerky, meat sticks, and cured sausages (that travel well). All in a variety of delicious animal options including caribou, reindeer, and venison. You can grab frozen items, or have them shipped elsewhere. Great gifts for people not in Alaska that may never eat these more exotic meats. They also had burgers and sandwiches as well as a wide array of ice cream treats. The ice cream isn't made in store (I believe it's Breyers) but the scoops and milkshakes were definitely tempting. Most impressive was a huge bin of bacon, cooked and waiting next to the grill. And while I didn't order any food, the fact that they keep such a quantity of bacon nearby means that they must put it on EVERYTHING! And any same person knows that bacon makes EVERYTHING better, so I have to assume every food option is awesome.

Get the Steak Alaska & sweet potato fries with honey mustard sauce. Yums! The reindeer Polish sausage was good but not great.

Very satisfying meal! I had the signature burger with sweet potato fries and my girlfriend had a halibut sandwich with clam chowder. Both were very tasty and filling! If you like jalapenos, ask what the difference between jalapeno signature and a regular signature are? Because the jalapeno burger is $2 more, but you can add your own peppers at the toppings bar they have. So pretty much don't waste an extra $2 unless it's something cool that I didn't realize. Also, if you are planning a trip to AK, make sure you budget double what your normal food budget would be. And if you're from AK, I hope you realize your food prices are CRAZY high! For our meals we spent a little over $30. I could have found the same meal in TX for less than $15. I don't think Loose Moose is especially expensive, even the grocery store prices were a lot higher. Just keep this in mind when budgeting :)

Steak Alaska - a caribou sandwich - with fries. Yum! This simple little cafe serves up burgers, sausages, and fries. Not really cheap (burgers and sandwiches are $8-10, plus fries $5 or $6 for sweet potato), but the food is fresh, hot, and satisfying. There is a condiment bar stocked with jalapenos, pickles, onions, sauces, etc. to fix your sandwich up just the way you like it. Loose Moose also sells bulk meat and wild game jerky to go.

Our only night in Fairbanks we headed out to the Loose Moose for our first experience of reindeer....yes, reindeer. Don't worry, they are mostly domesticated caribou and it's just like eating any other sort of farmed animal, no Rudolphs were harmed in the making of any of these products (as my mother asked every single time). We had the fried fish, a reindeer hotdog, and a burger with reindeer, along with a delicious milkshake. It is a tiny spot with mostly only locals going in, but has plenty of frozen and canned meats as gifts or to stock up. They also have delicious french fries and sweet potato fries!

  • Tami J.

Yummy! Great cafe with super good food, friendly service and a cozy comfortable seating area. The signature burger is really nice and tasty. The caribou sandwich and the buffalo burgers were also good, as were the french fries. I really like the way that they have the condiment station set up so that you can choose what you like for your burger. Their honey mustard sauce is excellent. You can also buy meat (including reindeer choices) and sauces (including Honey Mustard) as well as fun souvenirs.

Ate their Steak Alaska sandwich. It was ok. Tasted like a sausage patty served between a hoagie roll. Nothing too special and not really an 'Alaskan sandwich' since meat came from Canada. Next time will try the Loose Moose Signature Burger. May improve their rating.

  • Crystal L.

This is definitely a local joint with local game meat. The mustard and sausage they sell is extremely tasty and you won't ever want different mustard again (it is a bit spicy as well as sweet). Tourists may be put off by what it looks like, but the food is really good and the owner is very nice. I would definitely recommend this place if you want to try meat you can't get anywhere else and tastes great.

Good local establishment. Sweet potato fries were a little disappointing, but the signature burger more than made up for it- it was very good. Chocolate milkshake was awesome. All serving sizes were good. Seating was a little cramped, but they were busy. Staff friendly and courteous. Will return.

This is a small friendly restaurant that serves sausages and burgers and outstanding customer service. It shares a building with some sort of bar/lounge that wasn't open when we stopped by for lunch. Their staff is incredibly friendly and talkative. Based on their recommendations I split their steak Alaska with fries ($10.50, caribou patty with grilled onions and pepperjack cheese) and a buffalo bratwurst ($6.50) with my brother. My older brother and his wife ordered a reindeer polish dog with grilled onions ($6.00). After ordering at the counter they quickly brought out our food to our table. The caribou patty and the sausages were pretty good and the sausage case had some snap to them. They have a condiment bar with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, jalapeños, sweet peppers, raw onions, relish, sour kraut, etc. They used thick high quality napkins. Lining the shelves in the restaurant were packages and packets of Indian Valley Meats products for sale including sausages and jerky.

Had the Alaskan with soup and water, my husband had a buffalo burger it was great. That was my first time eating game meat, and it was very good. The establishment is cozy and clean. The staff is very friendly :) really enjoyed this I place and will definitely come back! Wish they were open for dinner.

Awesome little cafe that's quite easy to miss along a busy road. The reindeer sausage, caribou burger (steak alaska), and sweet potato fries really hit the spot... especially since we had to endure a night on the side of Parks Highway due to its closure from Skinny's Fire.

The food was VERY good especially the broccoli salad. The staff was friendly. The only thing I would like to see is more staff for a little faster service for the lunch crowd. Will definitely go back again.

Loved: The condiment bar, huge yummy burger with a decent sized serving of fresh sweet potato fries and a pretty great strawberry shake. Also, friendly staff, fresh meats sourced locally and a clean location. Didn't Love: Can't think of anything...

YUM! Had been meaning to try this place out for a while now (the logo is so cute!) and a visiting friend in town provided me with an excuse to go check it out. After one visit I intend to make this a regular stop. I got the basic beef, pork and buffalo blend burger with cheese- it was divine. Juicy and delicious. The toppings bar was full of fresh selections and tasty sauces. Ended up going back for a milkshake too. Loved the music! This is a low key place that is great for a juicy burger with friends. Affordable too!

This place is really good. Their signature burger is one of the best in Fairbanks. I also like that they have a condiment and veggie station where u can fix ur burger just the way u want.

Next time you find yourself in Fairbanks, you NEED to come here. Delicious fresh meat, great selection (and condiment/topping/sauce-bar to go with your selection), really nice staff, and fun atmosphere. I had the Alaskan Steak (a.k.a. Caribou Burger) with the sweet potato fries (and their delicious mustard to dip it in). Amazing.

I thought it was kinda dirty actually and they don't make the burgers fresh. Not a good look.

Its nothing special to look at but the food was great. Husband had a burger and I had the Alaskan Steak, both were yummy. The root beer float was probably the best I have ever had. The staff was also very pleasant the night we were in there.

This is the only place in Alaska that I know of that serves Buffalo and Caribou (Reindeer) burgers! Caribou burger patty, sweet potato fries and a glass of water was all I needed to feel satisfied :) I prefer wild animal meats over domesticated animal meats because they are healthier and taste WAY better!

    (4)
  • Denise K.

Went there based on yelp and local reviews. What no one says is that the meat is all very very processed. We were expecting to really taste the caribou and reindeer...alas, it was a very blah burger. Fries are ok.....the root beer floats were good. Service is friendly and helpful. Would not come again unless meat served was fresh and unprocessed.

Our highlight of Fairbanks. Quaint atmosphere, very friendly service and great food. From the midwest and having tried many game feed, we were very pleased with the Indian Valley Foods. A definite stop for anyone passing through. And eating breakfast at 8am when it is pitch black out makes you feel like an early bird!!

I learned that this café opened in April of this year featuring meats from the Indian Valley, which is south of Anchorage, and Evil Evelyn's Honey Mustard Sauce. I am SO glad we found this spot. It was an adorable ma n pa type spot. Hubby had the burger, which was a blend of beef, buffalo and pork, with cheese and jalapenos. He enjoyed the burger, but I thought it was overcooked (which is a theme in this region of the world). The sweet potato fries that accompanied his burger were perfect crispy strips of perfection. I ordered the Reindeer Polish Dog with grilled onions and a side salad. Fabulous! The sausage had a crisp casing and a juicy interior, and the bun was fresh and had some texture (rather than boring ole white bread). The onions (with some jalapenos and honey mustard sauce) made for a perfect topping. Plus, there were "toppings" a la Fuddrucker's (on a much smaller scale), so my salad was amazing. I enjoyed every bit of lettuce with celery and radishes that I topped with tomatoes, pickles, jalapenos and more of the honey mustard sauce. Yes, I loved that honey mustard sauce. Even though I find such sauces generally too sweet, this one was delicious. The primary ingredient was mayonnaise, which gave the sauce an excellent richness. Because the dressing used Dijon mustard, it was spicy as well. And, the honey accented the flavors, rather than drowning them out. The folks that work here are incredibly friendly and make this a top-notch experience. I highly recommend this place to anyone.

First had this food at the Midnight Sun Festival a few years ago. My family came here a few times after, during that trip. Reindeer steak sandwich was yummy as well as the reindeer dogs were great. looking forward to shipping some home this trip. (It is a nice option that they do this for travelers like us.) I do find food to be pricy in this Area compared to Baltimore, but this was one of the more reasonable places, and it was yummy. Great for the adventurous and non-adventurous palettes.

I am really not sure why this place has all the rave reviews it does. Maybe it was an off day, but we were not at all impressed. First off, our appetite was ruined by the woman demanding our order at the register. She was barking commands at us in such an off putting manner I almost walked out. I then asked her a simple question which clearly was beneath her because she again just continued barking at me. I had the steak alaska which was not at all what I was expecting. I was anticipating a caribou burger patty, this was a greasy caribou flattened out sausage patty in casing on a hoagie roll. My fiance ordered the signature burger and thankfully did not waste the extra money for the jalapeno burger because as the woman at the register admitted to, all it is is the signature with jalapenos on it which you can apply to the signature by yourself at the condiments bar for no additional charge. We opted to share some sweet potato fries, thank goodness, because they were bland and greasy, and as soon as I saw the cook pull out multiple sealed bags of them from the freezer in the shed outside, I wanted no more of them. My fiance did say his burger was decent, but nothing worthy of 4 or 5 stars. We are from Anchorage, but even if local, I can say without hesitation there would be no need for us to return here.

Husband LOVED this place. A word to the wise..if you don't like game meat, don't go here. EVERYTHING is made up of game meat. Reindeer, bison, etc... Great place if you like game!

4.5 stars, really? Burger was OK, nothing special. Fries, battered variety which were not so great. Service was fantastic though.

I know it is a local burger joint and I should have gotten the real meat burger but the Veggie Black Bean Burger is my favorite. It is even better with Evil Evelyn's Honey Mustard Sauce!!! Please is you are new or just visiting Fairbanks, try this restuarant. It is really good. And just remember that everything in Alaska is more expensive than the Lower 48, we have to pay more to get it up here!!!
