Good food, unique flavors, tastes fresh, could use a remodel though.

Service (3 out of 5): This is not a family owned restaurant... this a family 'run' restaurant. If you're expecting red carpet entry, white rags, and the finest wine, I suggest you turn your nose someplace else. Your server is most likely going to range anywhere from 10 - 18 years old, and lack a bit on communication. Your orders will most likely be accurate, but if you're a regular you know it won't be precise 100% the time. If you like to frequent during the lunch hour, order ahead. This place is known to produce a hurricane of hangry (hungry/angry) businessmen/women during the lunch hours. Dinner is much more relax, and while weekends remain just as busy, you're more likely to find a better experience around the evening. Again, call in and check the state of the restaurant, and make sure you plan ahead. Don't expect (at least not all the time) to come in for a 45 minute dinner and catch the next box office hit right after. The kitchen is run by two sisters, Sommay and Orathay, who work on main dishes and appetizers respectively, so the delay has nothing to do with the workers being sluggish, just the fact that 2 chefs are preparing food to order for 20 - 100 people at any given time. And they'll make anything to order, as long as the ingredients are available. Just be courteous. Food (4 out of 5): This is not your top of the line Thai cuisine, but what I love about it is the fact that it is not the American-overladen-with-sugar kind of cuisine. While the curries aren't much to be desired in terms visual presentation, the taste is phenomenal. Years of taste testing the right state of the curry on the high-fire oven makes it burn to the right amount. Ask anyone who has had a chance to sample the Shu Shee Kai or Eggplant Kai (the favorite for 20 years and still going). How about their rendition of the staple noodle dish in every Thai restaurant, Pad Thai? Amazing. The sauce is perfect, not too sweet, and the noodles are cooked brilliantly. Just don't wait too long to eat this, Pad Thai is never good cold. But my personal favorite? The peanut sauce! Not that watery, over coconutty, bland stuff you get at other restaurants. This is the real deal. Thick, savory, and just downright delicious. It's like Red Hot sauce, you can "put that sh*t on everything". Immigrating from Laos to Thailand during the secret war, and then finally to America, Sommay Kitchpanich has no real trace of Thai bloodline, but retains one of the most amazing historical stories of her travels. Starting off as a 20x20 ft. space in the back of her husband's Quik-E-Mart-esque grocery store, all she ever dreamed of was raising her four sons in a country with no conflict and a chance for them to have a real future. Only being self taught in the ways of Thai food, Sommay Kitchpanich does a bang up job. While not on par with the culinary masterminds of our time, the history and work put behind the food can only be enjoyed by those that look for more than a 5 star rating restaurant. You're going to see a family who has lived the American dream for 20+ years. With this restaurant they have raised their children to become amazing students and American citizens, have made lifelong friends with important figures in the Anchorage community, and have touched the lives of so many around them. I know this because I was one of them. As their newphew, I worked from 1998 to 2004 to help support their family while they helped support my life. I watched the regulars grow, some of the regulars pass, new regulars come, and some of the harsh critics leave. When you walk into Thai Kitchen, you are walking into history. When you bite into the food, you are tasting love and years of struggle to make it in this country. While that taste might sound like it should be bitter, it is in fact one of the sweetest, most wonderful things you'll ever experience. Put down your Yelp pens for a minute, and give it a shot. I guarantee you'll find something to love in this restaurant that will, even if not weekly, keep you coming back for more.

Highly recommend their lunch combo. Rice and 3 items. Is it the most authentic Thai restaurant? No, but they do well with the produce that is available, (ie. jalapeños instead of Thai chilis. Shu shee kai and the massaman curry are my favorites. The yellow curry can be a little too mild at times and a little watered down. I've never heard a complaint about their green curries either. Service isn't great, but the lunch combo makes it a quick in and out.

High hopes dashed. Gloppy, soggy, mushy "fried" rice with no resemblance to the dish as normally presented.. So maybe i pissed off cook when sharing my concern for ingredients I'm allergic too... One star for young man at front who graciously attempted to cover for inconsiderate expeditor. Yuck.

We got the vegetarian fresh rolls. Very tasty! We also got the ginger tofu and shu she. Both very good! Service was incredibly fast.

Normally the food is good but not this visit. Crunchy rice is not a good thing. Pad Thai was flavorless. Service not good.

  • Manda H.

It's a quaint little place; a nice hole in the wall. The Pad Thai is excellent and the crispy tofu with peanut dipping sauce is delicious. The hot sour soup was good, but vastly different than anything I've ever had before. I liked the large chunks of tofu in it. The staff is helpful and friendly. The interior is a bit shabby, but is no different than what you'd find in any local mom and pop place.

Years ago I used to eat here all the time, but then we moved and it fell off the radar. I used to like it very much, but went back today and was sorely disappointed. The pad thai was mushy, both in texture and flavor. It was quite bland without a hint of spice, citrus, or peanuts. The accompanying chicken was so dry it was inedible. My companions didn't fare any better with their food. The service was poor and the table devoid of any kind of seasoning other than soy sauce. The whole experience was so bad, it made me embarrassed for the owners.

Went with some friends today who said this was the best Thai in town... Actually it was the best Thai food I've had in Anchorage but didn't completely blow me away. I had the spicy chicken which was pretty tasty, but I was distracted by the grease running down the walls and general dirtiness of the restaurant. Long story short I will be back because the food was good but really wish the place wasn't so filthy! I was honestly too scared to even go in the bathroom for fear of what I would find!

This place is great. I would put them in a tie with the other good Thai restaurant in Anchorage. Tom Yum seafood is too much food for one person. The service is good but there is always a line to pay the check at the register. The buffet/to go ordering creates a bottle neck because the same person was doing the buffet and the register. Thai Kitchen is a long time great in anchorage. We have been loyal customers for close to 20 years. We have never had a bad experience.

You have got to try the Shrimp Rolls! The first time we got six Shrimp Rolls, the 2nd time we went we got seven Shrimp Rolls...Sadly the third time we did not get eight Shrimp Rolls. Simply amazing with the sweet sauce they give you. I always get the Pineapple Curry, the Curry does not back down, but the pineapple picks you right back up. There is plenty of chicken, and is in equal ratio to the pineapple. Definitely recommend!

Love this place. [Relatively] reasonable prices, great food, good service. Massaman & pineapple curries are excellent, as is the pad Thai and kow pad. I'd definitely recommend!!

Like Thai? This is the place to go. It's all about the food, friends & family here. The menu is huge and there is something for everyone even the most strict vegans. The prices are very fair especially for the amount of food you get. The food is delicious. The service is spot on and they aim to please. You cannot go wrong. Thai rolls, pad thai, veggie dishes...give it a whirl if you haven't already you won't be disappointed.

Came here at the tail end of the lunch rush with 3 friends. Our waitress acted like we were inconveniencing her day by being here. Our food to around 35 minutes for three of us to get our entrees, however, our 4th person didnt receive their meal for another 10 minutes. And when asked about it the staff wad really short with us. We sat, letting our food get cold as we watched other people (that got here a long time after us) got their food and she didnt. We will not be returning.

I'm not sure if I just had high expectations because this place had been recommended by a friend or if the food is really that lackluster. I think that the food was really just that lackluster. First of all, the chicken pad thai is really good here. I wish that is all I had ordered and I would have left a happy camper, except that it was a little over-priced. My friend and I ordered a coconut soup to share. It came out looking more like a type of red curry and did not taste ANYTHING like coconut soup. It was bland and mostly tasted of chicken broth. My friend ordered a red curry for lunch which came out looking and tasting exactly like the coconut soup. The only difference was that the curry had bamboo shoots and the soup had mushrooms. Then there's the price tag. It's totally cool if you are a neighborhood thai restaurant that may not have the best food, but at least make it affordable. I thought that $9 for a small plate of pad thai was pretty ridiculous.

This place is great. The food is delicious and flavorful. The decor might be tacky and the service might be a bit slow at times, but who cares when the food is this delicious. My parents have been eating here about once a week forever and my dad decided to have his 60th birthday here a few years ago. As a gift to my dad, the owners refused to let him pay. Just goes to show that they're really loyal to their customers.

Pad Thai was really good as was the combo rice Not a fan of the red curry at all. The Thai rolls were amazing!!

I haven't been here in years and years, and I figured I was due back for a visit. I came around 6pm, and it was pretty quiet, so we got a table immediately. Their menu is pretty extensive, and they had a ton of vegetarian options, which is always good to me. A couple of them had oyster sauce, so I asked one of the guys working if that meant chicken/fish/oyster broths/sauces were used in the rest, and he assured me they weren't (which is nice, because some places think vegetarian means fish and poultry). I love how it's family-owned and operated. The little girl that was helping out was adorable and I hope she gets some of the tips. I ordered spicy tofu, and disappointingly, it wasn't very spicy at all. It had fresh, thick slices of mild jalapeno, but I was expecting something that was full of chili. It was still good, though I would have actually liked a kick of heat (I always wonder if places make things less spicy for wimpy white folk, haha). It was also really oily -- I could only eat about half and gave my friend my leftovers to take home, because I knew I wouldn't finish it. Bummed, because the veg were so fresh and delicious and the tofu was perfectly fried, but there was just this thick sheen of grease that clung to everything and it really upset my insides. My friend ordered spicy noodles with chicken, and she loved hers. I was envious; the thick, dark red sauce looked spicy enough to make my eyes water. I also wish there was a little condiment tray at the table, besides just a soy sauce bottle. Maybe having some dried spices, like garlic and chili, would have been nice to have available, and even some of the infamous rooster sauce. Looking at their menu online, they have a rotating "quick lunch" menu that seems to change its offerings daily, with many options available. I think I'll have to come back and try that. I'm sure I'll be coming back again soon to try something new, and hopefully, it will encourage me to raise my rating. I'll probably avoid stuff that is made with a sauce, and opt for going for a curry or something that is made steamed, rather than pan-fried in lots of oil.

Just had a bad experience w/ Thai Kitchen in Anchorage today for lunch. I ordered pad thai with beef and didn't notice at first that I was accidentally served beef and chicken. No big deal for some people but I am allergic to chicken. The chicken was the same color as the noodles so I didn't see it at first and since I was checking a few messages on my phone at the beginning of my meal, I ate some of the chicken without seeing it. When I realized there was some chicken I took it out and was surprised that there was a lot of chicken. (The food was also extremely salty.) The waitress never returned to the table even once and when someone brought the check to the table I told her the mistake. She asked if I wanted them to make another dish for me but I said no since I had taken the chicken out and had already eaten about half of the meal (it is a small dish). When I checked out, the manager asked if everything had been okay and I said no. When I told him what had happened he just said, "Well next time you have to tell us before you eat it." I let him know that I didn't notice the problem until I had accidentally eaten some of the chicken and that I took the rest out. He repeated that I needed to let them know sooner. I let him no that no one had come to the table. He then handed me the bill for the full amount. For the rest of the afternoon, I have been having a terrible allergy attack and sure wish I had never gone there. I doubt I will go back.

Ok Thai food fans. I ate here at the Thai kitchen for three days in a row while I was in ANC for training. I never dined in but called in my order and picked it up to eat back at the hotel. The Beef Panang Curry and Chicken Eggplant Special were BOOYA awesome! The Spicy Noodles were simply out of sight! I will eat there again. Only thing I would like to see improved is the use of Thai chili for heat instead of jalapenos... not a deal breaker though.

Very good thai food. service can be a bit spotty, I generally miss the rush hour and expect a bit more prompt service. Overall food is great!

This restaurant is awesome! Atmosphere is very welcoming and relaxing. I have tried several items on the menu. My favorite dish is the vermicilli chicken salad with a thai iced tea. SO DELICIOUS!! The staff is very friendly, this is a family run business and you can tell. Service can be slow as they get very busy at lunch time (there is a to-go buffet available). I suggest going when you have at least an hour, very relaxing place to catch up with an old friend.

Good Thai food. Very inexpensive. Great for pick-up. Being a long time regular to TK, I would recommend take-out unless you are college-aged or younger. Little has changed since TK opened. The decor is almost the same since TK's beginnings. But most importantly however, the food is just as good with almost the same prices (~$7-$9 an entree). One minus is there is no beer/wine. Recommendations: - $8 combo lunch for take-out or dine-in - Fried Spring Rolls - Special Eggplant Chicken - best menu item IMO - Popeye Chicken - Garlic Chicken - Seven Wonder

I'm pretty much aligned with someone else's(Bradley J.) review. Hit or miss - I've eaten here a 4 times and have had some awesome duck but recently moved on to other dishes and quite frankly I find them mediocre. I'm trying to reduce intake so most recently went for the Seven Wonder veggie dish and added some tofu to it, which was stupid because they have veggie dishes with tofu and no extra charge (I was charged an extra $1). But I wanted a good spicy dish, no coconut and no noodle. To spice it up they added jalapenos. Why the heck jalapenos is beyond me, I prefer the little thai chilis. I asked for 5 star (hottest) and it was hardly that. Live and learn. The rice was a bit pasty, and bland (def not jasmine I'm used to if it was that). Not sure if there is a brown rice option will have to check next time. The staff are farily friendly. I'm hesitant to eat here again, but as I mentioned the duck I had in the past was good, no skimping on the duck part, just a tad spendy for lunch ($14). But its in a good location for me and for other friends who like to go to lunch so I'm sure I'll try some other dishes. One of my friends get the garlic chicken and likes that dish. I like Thai food, even if its not the greatest..

  • G. R. H.

Still the best Thai food in town. The spring rolls are fantastic. We usually go with the garlic or asparagus chicken. There are no surprises when you eat here, the food is as good as it was in 1990 - the first time we ate there. The 3-5 PM closure is inconvenient, but it is still the "go to" Thai place in Anchorage..

Just so so. Not impressed with menu and atmosphere. My husband loves the soup.

  • Hanna K.

Love my Chicken Pad Thai. I ordered my pad thai for take out for the very first time (last summer). When I went inside to pick it up, the restaurant's atmosphere was kindof..awkward. It didn't really feel like a restaurant with the carpeted floors.. Kindof dark, gloomy.. and they only had windows by the entrance since it is located in a strip mall. BUT! the food was really good. The noodles were moist and full of flava flaveeeee. They gave a nice heifty portion and I definitely saved the other half for later... yum!

The lunch combo is $9 for rice + 3 items. Food is just ok. It's cheap, and typical Thai American food.

  • Bradley J.

Hit or miss at Thai Kitchen. I've eaten here a couple times and have had some awesome duck and some mediocre dishes that were supposed to be their "really popular" entrees. The staff is pretty friendly and I haven't ever had any timing issues that some of the other reviewers have. Generally, the food comes up fast on take out or dining in. I'll definitely eat here again, but I will continue to search for something on their menu that comes up deliciously consistent.

I go to Thai Kitchen at least once a week, either take out or dine in. It's not fine dining, but its very convenient. Yes, sometimes the wait is a bit long on busy days and the wait staff can be a bit standoffish, but since I only live five minutes away, its way worth it. It's family run, and like all families, they probably have their good days and bad days. The decorations are bizarre and cool, the engraved nickel cups make you think twice, the childrem are either playing street fighter behind the front desk or taking orders , and there are free blow pops when you check out. For atmosphere, its certianly home style and unique. The menu is huge: so many vegetarian options. Peanut Sauce is pretty good, curries are great, pad see ewe is pretty good but not the best, and I avoid the rice noodle dishes because they do appear to be ramen noodles. My favorite dishes are tofu rolls, eggplant special tofu, any of the curries, Popeye tofu (their version of swimming rama) and tom ka tofu. My wife always gets the pad thai which is ok but can sometimes be very oily. The new dish "peanut noodles" is pretty good. Lastly, I love going to this place because I can spend $10 bucks and come away stuffed and with leftovers for at least one other meal.

Straight out of the suburbs quality thai food . . . I hate to be a critic, but there was flavor lacking, too many fried options and the lack of substantial, diverse vegetables in the offerings left me no choice but to dump Siracha on everything. We ordered curried pork w/ vegetables, tofu w/ spinach and vegetables and a "sampler platter" of appetizers to go. Everything on the sampler platter was fried but the slightly limp spring rolls. The morsels of pork in the curry dish were few and far between. The "vegetables" on the tofu dish included cabbage, a couple mushrooms and some spinach. Our to-go order took almost an hour. Suffice to say, I hope to find another thai joint to satisfy the random urge. Otherwise, I may end up having to wait until work trips to Seattle or San Francisco.

So, you can read my previous bad experience below. I know my husband never wants to go there again, but I was curious about the food as it's won some local awards. So, when I was doing laundry with my sister and my husband was home, I suggested we go get some take out while waiting for our clothes to dry. At every other restaurant I've been to, even very busy ones, when you order for take out, they make your food really quickly. Not at Thai Kitchen. We waited for half an hour, just sitting there. If I wanted to wait half an hour for food, I would have gotten a table and sat down!!! And they had the door open (in October!) and it was FREEZING!!! So, I was hungry and cold. Not a happy camper. The food was pretty good, not OMG good, and definitely not good enough to keep us coming back after 2 bad experiences out of 2!!!!

We used to love this place, been away from Anchorage for about 18 months and it has dramatically gone down hill, my meal was floating in grease and my husbands chicken was actually cold in his otherwise hot dish, like they put it on his plate fresh out of fridge and it was dry, flavorless and seemed to have been cooked in microwave it was so rubbery

  • Christopher B.

Will never come here again!!! I don't even want to waste time writing a review but it was so bad I must warn my fellow rewiew seekers. Short version: I ordered a rice vermicelli dish with chicken; (it had a real fancy discription on the menu by the way) and when it came to the table it was, no $hlt, top ramen noodles with dried up chicken with some cilantro on top. ( Dude, the damn top ramen was still in the shape it comes in stright out of the package.) I'm sure we all know what that shape looks like!! They also gave my fiancee the wrong dish that she ordered. We got up and left.....

Thai kitchen is my favorite Thai restaurant in Anchorage. The service is great and the food is delicious. It's a great little tucked away family restaurant.

    (5)
  • Kirk H.

The food is tasty, plentiful, and fairly priced. I tend to come in off-peak periods but I've found service to be friendly, if a little scattershot, and occasionally adorable when the kids of the family who run the place are helping. That said, I come here because it's local for me, and they haven't given me any reason to travel farther for my tom yum fix. Vegetarians will appreciate the many vegetarian options on the menu.

I love thai kitchen! Always consistant. Sometimes, a long wait, but worth the wait. If taking carry-out, call ahead. Definitely try the popeye tofu..

I love the Chicken Pat Thai. I love the Fresh Rolls. I love the peanut sauce. And I love the price! And as much as I love the aforementioned items, I do not love the hours. I do not love the location. And I least love the decor. This place has the best food, but the atmosphere leaves MUCH to be desired. That's why I mostly get my orders to go!

Hands down the best Thai food in Anchorage. Shu She Tofu is to die for. The restaurant is kind of lame, they could use a remodel. Service is mediocre, but it depends on the night. For me, the beat way to experience Thai Kitchen is to order your meal takeout and eat at home in front of the TV.

  • e J.

I had the opposite experience of most people here it seems. The service is decent but the food, so-so. I know this place get high marks from The Press and ADN but I'm consistently disappointed by the food. Specifically the insistence of putting too much sugar and salt in every dish. From the soup to the curry its always the same here. The flavors underneath seem good and fresh but they are muted by the salty sweet onslaught on top. This seems to be a typical phenomenon in NW Thai food, the misconception that "farang" like it this way. Thai House on Muldoon is a better local option if you want something closer to the real thing.

So-so food. Awful service. We called in an order, got there 20 minutes later-- no food. Dragonlady told us we didn't order. I showed her the number in my cell phone, "Just because you dial, doesn't mean you talk to anyone here." Never eating there again.

  • Sarah P.

The food here is good. I really like their curries and the curry fried rice. The place would get a better rating, but there are a few set backs: If you are one for service, don't bother coming... the service is horrible. If you go during your lunch hour... well you better hope your lunch is longer than an hour. It will take them forever to take your order then forever to bring your order. They serve their water in metal cups and leave a little metal pitcher on your table. The idea is very cute, but it makes the water taste absolutely disgusting. Maybe its the cleaning solution they use, or just the metal, but whatever it is I can't stand to drink the water there.

This is still my favorite Thai place in town, despite having tried the many others out there. I'll echo what most have said. The decor is basic, the service is slow, but the food is excellent. If you go out for the food, and don't mind 'the experience', it's a great choice. The prices seem reasonable and we always bring home leftovers.

i'm giving a three for it being in alaska, otherwise they'd get a two in LA/So Cal...the food was pretty good and their thai iced teas were only a fuckin dollar... thats what the fuck im talkin about... we had the tom yum, garlic chicken, seafood curry, red chicken curry, battered halibut, something else and the half duck... the latter was really not a half a duck... like we dont know what half a duck looks like... come on now buddy... the service sucked ass... it took them too long to sit us in an almost empty restaurant and twice that to take our orders...

I broke a few of my rules trying out Thai Kitchen. One of the broken rules was listening to someone I don't know and ignoring the yelp score, the other is eating at a Thai restaurant with a buffet. Called in my beef pad thai order, was told 30 minutes. I arrived 35 minutes after I placed the order and it took another five minutes for them to bring it out... and it's pork. Whatever, I'm not waiting for them to remake it. So I take my pork back to the installation, and discover that it's a medium sized portion of pad thai and a small portion of white rice. Kinda weird. I ordered it at maximum spiciness. I guess Alaska doesn't have a lot of spice, because this would be considered mild at most Thai restaurants I've been to. The food is ok, but boring. The restaurant is ether way understaffed, or staffed with people who have no idea how to organize or manage time. The search for a local Thai place continues.

Dad wanted Thai so we stopped in for their lunch combo (3 entrees and rice, $10). Worst value in town. Smallest amount of food for $10. Seriously who only gives one scoop of food?! Even Sagayas is better than here. At least the options tasted fresher than my last disappointing visit (hence the added star).

Pretty good prices for a really filling meal. Nice homey atmosphere with nice employees and good legit oriental Thai food. It may not seem like much from the outside but it is a cozy restaurant where you can either eat alone or with a whole group and it would be pretty enjoyable.

Once again, huge disappointment. Ordered take out with co-workers just after 8 pm. Ordered the Tom Kah soup with veggies instead of a protein. What was in my soup container was a ladle of coconut milk. No mushrooms, no veggies, not even a container of rice. I am DONE with Thai Kitchen

  • Lydia S.

Ugh! If I wanted Carrs stir fry I would have gone there. I ordered take-out over the phone, was told it would be an hour. Fine, I'm too tired to cook and I just want Thai food. Not worth the wait. There is some sort of oil in the spicy chicken that makes it absolutely like stir fry from the deli. I also ordered the pad Thai, which just looked sad and coagulated all into one big lump. Plus they use jalapeños instead of Thai chilis- I cook enough Thai at home to know they are not difficult to get in anchorage, in fact they are incredibly cheap. For the price (~$11 a dish) I'm disappointed and will not eat here again unless the quality changes. At least they give you enough white rice? Two stars.

I was not impressed. This restaurant has great potential but is very far from it at the moment. Waitress was way too young to give good service. The floor was dirty and they have storage all over the restaurant. The food was OK definitely nothing special. I got broccoli chicken and the broccoli was undercooked with overcooked chicken. Definitely not worth what we paid.
