This has literally got to be the best Americano I've ever had! I used to work close the side street cafe and would go in each morning. The line was long, and they only take cash but it's worth a trip to the ATM and the wait! I'd get some of the home made chocolate chip cookies as well! This place is great and I miss living in AK just for this cup of coffee.

This place is cute! Plenty of cozy seating and I like the peaceful but cluttered decor. Prices are pretty cheap for downtown. I only had tea that was republic of tea for $1 per bag. Cash only and no wifi and limited hours. The old man is really nice and friendly! I cannot criticize his barista work though or the food, maybe next time. It's old and little cluttered, but they have a peaceful calm charming environment. I probably won't come back since its cash only and no wifi and the tea was nothing special.

Awesome little coffee shop in the heart of downtown Anchorage. They have a limited menu home-cooked food to accompany the excellent coffee. You can even get coconut milk lattes! This place is badass. I'm definitely coming back.

Cash only!! Street parking is a little scarce. And the locals with their refillable mugs are a little territorial in this place. Didn't exactly get the warm & fuzzy vibe so many have from the "sweet" folks that own this joint but it wasn't bad service either. When I asked about some of the different flavored mochas i got an "I don't drink that stuff" response. And she wasn't sure if coconut was in some of the products or not. Food allergies (I don't have...just don't like artificial coconut flavoring) are so prevalent (whether real/imaginary) and I was a little surprised she wasn't more responsible about her knowledge of what she was serving. Plus when it's early in the morning & before I've had my coffee, I really don't want to have to pull information out of people...I'd actually prefer not to talk at all. Opening a coffee house, they had to anticipate there'd be people like me who NEED coffee to function, right? Please learn to deal with us! The espresso is amazing and I loved the Milky Way ! Only food I had was the carrot cake muffin (I don't think that's what it's called but it had the same ingredients as my carrot cake) and it was mostly moist and completely yummy. Not a crumb left. There are a few tables if you want to sit down instead of grab & go. But the decor is a way too clutter-y for my taste so I wouldn't enjoy all that chaotic energy. And let's face it, i don't have to live there or anything so more power to them and their gazillion political stickers & magnets! Go for the 5star coffee, tolerate the 4star attitude & you'll be happy you stopped in!!!

Mocha was good and not overpowering. Friendly charming people including local patrons. Cash only though.

Ordered the black coffee. Did the trick. Would purchase again! Awesome atmosphere but does not accept credit cards :(

Great coffee, great environment, great service! All around just an excellent coffee shop to stop at! Unfortunately they only take cash but that is a very minor inconvenience.

I really enjoyed the Milky Way mocha and went back the second time in town. Very well done and worth paying cash!

Loved it! Highly recommend going here when you are in downtown anchorage. It's a small, cozy place which looked like it was owned by the older couple who served us. The coffee and breakfast was delicious! It tasted homemade and fresh. Wish there was a place like this by where I live. It's somewhere I would go everyday!! Highly recommend it. Especially if you are like us; we love "mom and pop" places with homemade food. That's the feeling we got here. And if you like coffee, we thought it was too die for!

I went here both days that I got to be in anchorage. The atmosphere is adorable. The owners are really nice and the music is good. There are also neat little magnets on the espresso machine that I enjoyed reading. They have a different special everyday that is written on a chalk board at the counter. I don't know who draws it everyday, but they are extremely talented! There was a different picture drawn on a white board both days. They also have old specials hanging from the ceiling. Seriously, they are beautiful!!! I got a latte both times and it was pretty good. The foam good when she did it, and he does it a bit differently. The second time the latte was a lot hotter than a latte should be. No matter what, they are still much better than Starbucks!!! I will be back when I come back to Anchorage.

Small, authentic, homey. Great place for a long conversation. I had the Oregon chai which was delicious. Plus their muffins are legitimately homemade and fantastic ... Highly recommended!

I went here a few years ago when I visited Alaska and my family and I loved it so much we came all three days for breakfast. Great cup of coffee and a wonderful atmosphere. I loved the older couple and the guys doodles were pretty cool. All in all the perfect small, local coffee shop.

The african peanut chicken stew is AWESOME!!!!! But too bad cuz I got the LAST BOWL!!! And the live music was so beautiful... And the coffee sooo good. I love this place.

This is a locals hangout and while we were initially viewed with suspicion we soon met a couple of locals who were very friendly. Not quite Portland coffee but not bad.
(5)Dana T.
Love this little coffee shop. George and Deb welcome people-regulars, visitors, newbies, and even homeless- with warm conversation, great coffee and some nice edibles (bagels, which they'll toast up for you, toast, muffins, and more). Local artwork decorates the place along with George's incredible original art. Great place to start your day or grab a midday coffee!

Best coffee shop in downtown Anchorage. Just be sure to have cash :)

The literal definition of a "Mom and Pop" as it is actually run by an older couple. Very reasonable, not priced like a tourist trap. The line of locals is often out the door and they seem to remember people's usual orders before they even get up to the counter. But a heads up that this is a cash-only establishment. If you're a big conservative or republican, the décor might put you off. there is definitely a strong liberal/pro-democrat vibe in the hole-in-the-wall shop but that's its character. As I'm not a big coffee drinker, I tried their chai and it wasn't bad with 3 flavors to suit your tastes. Cheap breakfast and fast service, what more could you ask for?

This is what most coffee shops aspire to be ... Friendly, cozy, interesting, quality, affordable, tasty - cash only adds to the charm :). Great double espresso, yogurt + granola.
(5)Laura E.
This is a really cute little coffee shop. The ambience is welcoming and relaxed, the coffee is good, and they have a great selection of bakery items and breakfast stuff. The older couple who run the place are friendly and even have some vegetables growing in plant pots by the window! I wish I lived in Anchorage so I could come here all the time!

This review is for their coffee only - yes I agree with some below sweet owners and the food looks home made but the latte I ordered was sub par they use the cheapest milk you can buy and she made it in 30 seconds. If I wanted Starbucks I would go there. I have tried three different coffee shops in anchorage and I am sill searching for a proper artisan coffee shop where people take great pride in the coffee. Would have given another start if it was just about ambiance and food.

It is such a unique place in anchorage. The owners are friendly and welcoming. The coffee is not the best, but the place is a gem. Enjoyed it greatly.

After lunch in Anchorage, J was craving Ice Cream. Said our friend, another J, "do you like coffee?" "Sure." Other J implored us to go to Side Street Espresso, and we listen to everything that Other J says, since he's quite the knowledgeable chap. Upon entering the coffee shop on that chilly shoulder season afternoon, we were greeted by warmth - both the physical kind and the friendliness that we got from the staff. We were also greeted by many a liberal card/sign/sticker, which made us bleeding heart liberals feel mighty warm inside. But you don't care about the anti-Palin signs or pro-Obama stickers or heating system, now do you? You want to know how the espresso milkshakes are, and everything else is a metaphorical cherry on top (for the record, the milkshakes do not come with cherries). Well, they're gosh darn tasty, and I don't use the term gosh darn often. I mean, they use real espresso and solid ingredients, so what's not to love? And, upon returning to other J's house, he showed us a picture the Side Street staff had drawn of Atticus from To Kill A Mockingbird that Other J got printed. How cool is that? I'd say it's two metaphorical cherries on top for Side Street!

Great spot for a little breakfast and coffee; great service, owners very hospitable. Do it!
(5)Kerry Q.
best coffee spot in aK hands down...super sweet and lovely owners who do a ton of great things in the community. i'm a fan all around!
(5)Travis R.
Made a quick stop here before work one morning. I had a slice of artichoke sundried tomato quiche and a tall Alaska chai tea latte. The older couple who run it are very nice and just a heads up it's cash only.

I love this place and have become a regular. They don't take checks or credit cards, so I have an account on file with them at all times. The daily latte and mocha specials ($2.50-$3.25) are a fun way to indulge without feeling guilty about spending $4 on coffee every day. They also sell locally made baked goods, hard boiled eggs, sandwiches, quiche, etc and most of the time these are made with healthier ingredients than you'd typically find in a coffeeshop, without inflating the price. The Sunrise Muffin, my favorite, runs around $2.50. Best of all is the atmosphere. The owners will learn your name usually by the second time you come in and they participate in the community by hosting musicians and artists and allowing local groups to set up in their shop selling bread, girl scout cookies, etc. In all a great place to grab a coffee, meet with locals, see some art and just take a little vacation in the middle of your work day.

A great stop for coffee between my B&B and the conference I was attending. They were pretty quick during my early visits, serving Kaladi coffee (IIRC) without the questionable information. Nice general feel even though I didn't have much chance to sit down and enjoy it. I'm pretty sure they're cash-only, but their far-lower-than-travelling-ATM-fees prices made that a non-issue for me. They also had a dwindling supply of the Alaska Quarterly Review ... I helped shrink it to their last copy, and I definitely recommend reading the AQR. Good mix of writing from all over with enough Alaska writers to keep its own character. Side Street also were hosting the finalist photos from an Alaskan photography competition, which made it an even better stop for this visitor.

The owners at Side Street are so lovely, I will definitely be a return customer. The latte I had was terrific and made just the way I wanted, with no froth and fat free milk. There is some great local photography up on the walls, I might try to exhibit some of my own work, as well. Ignore the Starbucks! Support this great local spot and hang out, enjoying the the cozy friendly vibe. Bring cash, I don't think they accept any cards.
(5)Randy R.
A local resident recommended the place and said that they had the best coffee in town. That may be but Alaska is known for it's scenery not it's food (non seafood of course) so I have to disagree with the other reviews. The coffee was OK but not any better than Starbucks. The ham & cheese on a croissent was good but very greasey and one thin slice of lunch meat ham didn't do much for me.

Good coffee on vacation is hard to find. The best spots frequented by locals are often hidden from tourists. This gem of a spot is both a local favorite and accessible in downtown Anchorage. They offer delicious coffee drinks such as a coconut almond latte and an almond roca latte. They use coffee ice cubes in their iced coffee which is such a smart idea. The owners seemed nice and service was good. My only complaint is that the strawberry rhubarb muffin was totally lacking in rhubarb flavor. Regardless, quit your Starbucks (aka Char-bucks) addiction and give this place a shot.

Bacon and cheese Bagel? Why has no one thought of this before. Amazing! This place is perfect to relax and take in a hot drink. Good mix of locals and tourists (the visitor center is a couple of blocks away).

Recently visited Anchorage and discovered this very nice coffee place downtown. Absolutely great place to have coffee, grab something to eat and meet local bohemians..... Fantastic atmosphere!!!!! Love it..... My cup of tea ;)

Great coffee, good food, great location. this place is a fav for me in Anchorage.
(5)Kirk F.
Excellent local place. Totally casual inside, has the broken-in coffee-dive feel yet squeaky clean and well kept. Excellent coffee--the latte was well made and Captain Midnight (brew + espresso) was killer--dark and strong an flavorful. Friendly and chatty (but not too much if you know what I mean--and I think you do) people run the place. Love it! Don't settle for Starbucks...
(5)Molly B.
Hands-down, my favorite coffee shop in Anchorage. Lots of local flavor. The coffee is awesome. The owners are friendly and welcoming and very involved in the community. Their soups are delicious, and with a toasted bagel on the side they're a great lunchtime deal. Can't recommend it enough.

Side Street Espresso is a gem! I'm so happy to have found this place. Wonderful coffee, food, atmosphere and service. Really..Afraid to tell too many people about it but have to compliment.

Great place to sit down for a coffee or light breakfast. The type of coffee house you usually only see in the movies and wish you can find in your neighborhood. Prices are really low and the lattes are tasty. Highly recommend this place; it's worth your while. I wish we had more places like this back home in NYC!
