It's all about the broth! Phonatik is by far the best Pho restaurant in anchorage. We ordered the pork fried egg rolls cooked to a golden brown perfection. However, the fish sauce was too fishy and I opted for the siracha sauce that was on the table instead. The combination Pho was packed with strips of beef with generous portion of other meats. The meatballs were tender and the tripes (I think) were properly cleaned and prepared. Again, the broth was well seasoned not too salty like other Pho places in the area. The garnish were fresh and just enough for two bowls. I do have to say that the restaurant's name "Phonatik" kinda project an Americanized pho, but you would be surprised. This is my new "go to" place for pho and they will see me more often this cold winter. oh yeah, did I mention they also have great service? Good food and great service equals my support for this local gem.

Ate in with my friend today and had the lox rolls and rare steak pho. So good and all the food came out in a really quick fashion. The wait staff was perfect with keeping our water glasses full. Table and glasses and chopsticks and silverware was spotless.

Great lunch and casual dinner spot. I've been here many times and the food is consistently yummy. My favorites are the chicken pho and chicken wraps. The pricing of the pho is reasonable too and I like their location and fun atmosphere inside. I have also ordered pho to-go for lunch several times and they are always very prompt. You cannot order a small size to-go though.

I Love this place! I've been eating Pho since it first hit Alaska. When I had my jaw surgery it was literally the only thing I could eat for almost 6 weeks that would make my mouth stop hurting. I checked out a few spots but for quite awhile the best place around was the one in Dimond Mall. Then Phonatik opened! The interior is really cool, simple yet trendy, and just different. I like the chalk wall with the definitions of PHO and the correct pronunciation etc. It is bright and welcoming. I can't tell you how many bowls of this soup I've tried and in just about every flavor, and every place in town. I like Phonatik because they don't have a crazy amount of items they offer on their menu. It's simple which means they stick with what they know, and they make it well instead of having their hand in a little bit of everything. I"ve tried all the flavors of their Pho, my favorite is still the beef Pho with lean beef and brisket, but the seafood PHO is also great! Their broth is just the right amount of cooked broth, seasoning, and anise, so much so that you hardly need to add any extra's to it to flavor it up (which is a good thing) I also absolutely love their Bahn Mi sandwiches too, they are DELICIOUS! Just the right size, and uniquely different then some of the other places that offer similar items around town. I have also had the pork and shrimp spring rolls. The rice noodles were slightly dry inside but they were still tasty and came with a kindof peanuty/hoisin kind of sauce that was different from the normal spring roll fare but quite tasty. Service is always fast and friendly here, and they are more then willing to explain things to you if your not sure what your getting or wanting to get, plus the prices are affordable. Great bowl of PHO for $10.00 and the Bahn Mi sandwiches are only $6.95. I'm never disappointed when I eat here, they are consistent and delicious!

This has become my new pho place in anchorage. If your not feeling pho I suggest you try their Banh mi sandwich (don't forget to tone it up) it's very affordable and filling.

Modern decor compared to a more traditional looking pho shop. Biggest disappointment for me was the quality of the veggies; bean sprouts were brown. But there was a good amount of everything available (jalapeños, basil, lime). The broth itself has great flavor and stays hot enough to cook the meat, the noodle has a good toothiness to the bite. I tried the combo (#1) which had a good thin cut on the steak, and tender tripe which makes me not mind that it doesn't come chopped up. Egg rolls are also worth it. I didn't see a drink menu which boggled me a bit. But they do have a pho challenge if you're up to that. I wish it was better ventilated, there's nothing like breaking a sweat in a hot shop while eating pho. But nonetheless, I'll be returning for sure.

This resturant was kickass, quick service, excellent fresh food and ingredients. The broth was top notch. If I was on death row I would choose the rare steak pho as my last meal.

Fast and friendly service! The serving sizes were awesome, especially for the price! I looked at the small bowl and thought, "that's like one bite!" So I got the medium size.. I could barely finish it. My boyfriend is a powerlifter and eats for two people so he got the large size with extra meat and couldn't finish it! He was surprised himself. The spring rolls are awesome! Highly recommend going here! The environment is trendy.

Wow, what a pleasant surprise! The interior and the general art direction of this place have a distinctly modern, hip vibe. Something you'd never suspect from a place in a humble Anchorage strip mall, reminds me more of an Asian fusion restaurant in Portland's Pearl District. It seems like most places in Anchorage that contain "Pho" in their title, are often Thai restaurants in disguise (not that there is anything wrong with that, Pho Jula is probably my favorite "Thai" restaurant in town!). Note here; everything is distinctly Vietnamese. Their menu is just the way I like it: short, sweet, and specialized. Too many places nowadays try to "everything to everyone" and end up being "nothing to no one". Again, not here. You'll find Pho and a handful of other Vietnamese staples, as well as some appetizers. It's laid out in a simple format resembling more of a sub shop or a Chipotle rather than a typical Asian restaurant menu with hundreds of combinations. (this is not the type of menu where you say "I'll have the #127") I got the beef bowl. As other reviewers have pointed out, the broth here is much more richly-spiced than at other Pho places. Personally, I'm into this. I barely had to use the additional pho accoutrements! The chunks of beef were large, plentiful, hearty, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious! It has had broccoli in it. That may not be "traditional" for pho, but I thought it paired with the beefy flavors wonderfully. And the medium size bowl was only 10 bucks! 10 bucks for non-fast food is a steal in Anchorage. Some other things I noticed: Cool little bar area with an EXCELLENT beer (?!) selection. Seriously, you won't find many dedicated BARS in Anchorage with taps this good, and in a Pho shop, it's practically unheard of! I counted well over a dozen taps, and not mainstream swill either, PHO-KING good craft brews. (for those of you that thought you were going to make it through this review without any Pho-puns, you are naïve and too-trusting!) Memorabilia on the walls from some sort of MEGA PHO EATING CHALLENGE they do here. I'm not sure of the complete details, but some folks have apparently won $800+ for their PHONBELIEVABLE soup-swilling skills. One more thing: these folks are open LATE on weekends!

Hmm... That's odd, I swear I already wrote a review for this place. So we just get the raw flank pho, the service is really quick and the pho is delicious. We had an issue one of the two time we came here. their heating seemed to be broken. It was a freezing day and the temperature in the restaurant would literally fluctuate 20 degrees, from full blast burning hot and sweating to freezing as if we were outside... It ruined the experience (no, it wasn't too much hot sauce). But they are quick and efficient and looks pretty nice inside. We'll be back, hopefully their HVAC is fixed

Food so-so and that's if your order gets placed. Be ready for super slow service and a whole slew of excuses. My advice is take your business elsewhere.

On those cold and ridiculously freezing nights in Anchorage what are you craving? Obviously something warm, hot, and delicious. Pho is definitely something that comes straight to my mind and finding the right place is always hard. Luckily I have a friend who is from Alaska and she recommended we eat at Phonatik. A place that is supposedly Phonomenal for the soul and for pho crazy people. We came down here for some drinks, appetizers, and pho! I ordered the reindeer wontons, which were very flavorful and the meat tasted a bit like bacon. I also had a chicken and shrimp spring roll. Loved the typical peanut sauce with it. Now the pho menu has the options for combinations and also a pho your way choice. I ended up getting the tripe, tofu, and beef. The broth was decent, but the small size bowl was just way too small. A bottle of sake and some beers were bought so that was nice as well. This place has a wide spectrum of opinions from customers. Some extremely disappointed and others love it. I was satisfied and it was a nice time. I sat right next to the fireplace among the hipster style of it all. The drink menu has a lot of options and this is great for beer. A good pregame place or even a nice place to go after a night around town. It may not be the super authentic pho experience, but for what it is you can enjoy a meal here for sure.

A new fav!! I really like that they offer sm, med & large size bowls. I dont always like to take home leftovers. Had the smokd salmon fresh rolls and looooooved them. Got the sm bowl of chicken/chicken soup and it was super hot and fresh. I love the plate of sprouts and jalapenos they serve with it! Will be going again and want to try other items. Their menu is small, but varied, I think it will bring me back. Great prices too. The staff was great, very attentive and friendly. I like the youthful, relaxed atmosphere. Very clean and I hope it stays that way! I dont like it when a new place opens, you love it, then over time, they go down hill. I hope this place maintains the standards they have set! If they do, I will be a regular fer-sure!

My go to Pho place in Anchorage. I love that there are sizes to the Pho bowls and there are variations to the spring rolls. Very clean and the food is fresh.

I'm relatively new to the pho-nomenon, and there are a lot of pho restaurants in Anchorage. This one is one of my favorites. I enjoy their meatball pho and their barbeque vermicelli dishes. They are always fresh and served fairly quickly, and the flavor is consistent and very good. I like that I can get a small, and it's a good size, for very little money. If I want leftovers, I will get a large. The broth is flavorful, not too salty, the meatballs good (not rubbery as I have had some places), and it includes really fresh accoutrements (the basil, sprouts, and jalapeno). I also really like their fresh pork springrolls. They have a few decent, affordable wine options, too. I go there regularly to eat in or get takeout. They have a surprisingly hip ambiance that sets them apart from similar restaurants, but as far as I'm concerned, I'm there for the food. However, it does add a nice touch.

Food was delicious (chicken pho in chicken broth & appetizer of CaliPHOnia roll). But service was slow which is why I didn't rate 5 stars. Perfect spot to defrost with hot soup and their hot fireplace (but then again, all fireplaces are hot, aren't they?) Can't wait to go back!

Would have been a five, but the waitress was not the best. She might have been new. The pho was great!!!!! Lovely broth. I like that they offer a small serving of pho. There is never a wrong time for a large, steaming bowl of pho, but sometimes I just want a little of this and a little of that. Loved it. Will go back!

my Pho Combo that i ordered to-go did not come with Ox Tail, which was what i most expected to have in there. Broth was a little salty.

Love this place! Come almost everytime we are in Anchorage. We recommend the oxtail pho, spring rolls and the bahn mi.

  • Lucille S.

Yum! The spring rolls are delish! I loved the rare steak pho as well! My 12 year old can be pretty picky and she loved it. We are making this a regular go-to for us for take-out or dine-in nights.

We've eaten here several times and it is consistently awesome. Quality ingredients, courteous staff, always clean and a trendy atmosphere make this one of our favorite places to have dinner or lunch. My hubby says this is the best calamari EVER...anywhere!

I tried Phonatik at my last visit to Anchorage and I must say it is one of the tastiest Pho I have ever tasted anywhere. This place is very authentic and the broth is excellent and it's one of the only places I've found that's more than just a hole in the wall restaurant (not that there's anything wrong with that). At around 20 tables, it can easily get you in and out for your one hour lunch breaks. The staff is always polite which is personally a big factor for me. One thing I love about this place is that you can choose what you want in your soup, Here you can have the ingredients you want instead of just settling for something that's pretty close. I was quite impressed, and will definitely be going back.

I love the Pho Here but they have other great dishes for the non pho fans! Everything is reasonably priced well prepared. Great spot to grab some lunch, I would recommend to a friend.

Absolutely the best Vietnamese food I've ever had. And I've had a lot of it. Trendy spot... Nice decor, even has beer and wine available. Totally worth it. My new favorite spot.

  • Erica C.

I love how they only serve Vietnamese food here! This is probably the only Asian restaurant in town who specializes in just one ethnic food group--unlike others! It really bothers me when a pho restaurant serves fried rice or when a sushi restaurant has thai curry on their menu. This makes Phonatik unique and their food is very authentic. Their pho broth is very tasty. You can literally just eat the pho without adding any condiments! And they don't skimp you on the meat or noodles. There's plenty of both in the bowl. I really enjoyed their egg rolls! The filling was delicious and they were fried perfectly! The side sauce also complimented it very well! I also got to try their banh mi. The meat in it was bomb. Marinated perfectly!! I almost died of food coma after lunch. One day, I will attempt the pho challenge! Lol.

  • Rhianna B.

Not a bad place, but it was a bit annoying that over half of their beer menu was out of stock. I also noticed that they put broccoli in about every pho dish which I find.... weird. At one point I was listening to about 3 different kinds of music at the same time; the kitchen, the main room, and the TV over their out-of-stock bar. Anyhow, it's a nice, casual atmosphere that seems to be attracting hipsters, and the waitstaff did a fine job. Just be forewarned that it may not be up to most folks' standards.

Me and my sister thought we would try a new Pho restaurant from our regular pho spot. The service was okay, got seated fairly quickly. Placed our order then didn't see the waiter until he dropped off the bill. I ordered the shrimp pho, my sister got the seafood combo pho. Something about the broth was just off, very bland. We didn't get the sides that you would normally get at other pho restaurants. My sisters shrimp was raw, or thawed then re-frozen then thawed. Anyways she spit it out, needless to say we were done after that.

I'd i had the energy to drive across town again I would go back and ask for my money. They gave me two pieces of soggy, black basil, no chives and maybe five onions. The broth was nothing to brag about either.

Great place to enjoy a nice hot bowl of Pho. I loved that I was able to pick the meats that I wanted to create my own bowl of Pho.

Ok. Not bad. Broth was too sweet but two large oxtails bits made it tasty! Rich! GF had the vermicelli salad. Calamari was good too!

  • Lien B.

This place has nice atmosphere but that's about it. They were very unorganized, almost giving us someone else's order twice! The soup isn't awful but it's a far cry from what it should be. The broth tasted watered down and gamy. I ordered a sandwich to go when I placed my regular order and when we were done they told me another 15 minutes for my sandwich. I waited 20 minutes before they told me they placed my order in with someone else's! I will never come back. *the egg rolls and calamari are actually good. Forgot to add that.

Their pho isn't even pho it's so oily and greasy they say no msg I think it's filled with msg. I love spring rolls but theirs is terrible. At least their services are decent not the best but decent

Great ambiance and good food. First time having pho in Anchorage and nothing to complain about. Portions are huge when it's comes to pho. Would recommend the fried wontons. Also, don't come in layers, it is quite warm inside.
