This used to be a high-quality steak house. We still go here more than any other restaurant though because we like the food. The atmosphere is undesirable though. Dates back to the 70's. When they tried to make it a sports bar they took down the wall between the bar which gets most of the action and the noise it booms into the restaurant is obnoxious. Now they took the TV's down, ugly ceiling fans down and returned some of the steak house look. BUT not good enough! Sadly, it needs a $100,000 plus remodel and the business they get just doesn't support it. Since we like the wait staff (Melissa is the best) and the food we'll keep coming back hoping for better surroundings but enjoying the great food and prices.

Two stars is generous but one felt a little too low. The food was eh, the service not much better. There were 4 entrees on the menu, that's it, four. My steak was practically raw and had zero flavor. What really bothered me was the check. The kids meals were on the menu for $4.29 each and we were charged $8. We also had a $10 off coupon from the Northern Lights book but for some reason they only took off $8.40. We waited a while to point this out but no one came back to our table and we figured they could have the $10 because there is no chance we'll be back in the future and it wasn't worth our time to wait around. There are so many good restaurants in this area- my suggestion is to try one of them instead.

Let it be known that i've only been here once, and for happy hour, so I didn't get the full menu experience, but this is a pretty standard 3-star kind of joint. The bar was well stocked, the bartender was attentive, the chairs and tables were clean and orderly. A pretty good start. Our drink order was simple, but the pours were good. Balanced, not too much, not too little. We ordered a handful of appetizers for the table which were neither a smashing success, nor were they bland and boring. Again, pretty solidly average. The noise level was appropriate for a bar, slightly loud, lively, good energy. Overall, there's nothing really crazy to report here. It's a very solid 3. In my mind, if you just want a spot that will meet your needs, this is it.

Like a previous reviewer I would give Pepper Mill an average 3. Not the best steak I've had but definitely not the worst either. The steaks we ordered were cooked to our specifications. The decor is a bit outdated and Sea Galley (joined to Pepper Mill) seems to be more popular. If you are looking for a good, but not great steak, I would try this place. The appetizers were interesting and tasted great but the presentation could be slightly improved.

Went in at 7Pm on a Friday night and they only had two tables sat in the entire restaurant, that should have been a clue. Ordered a steak with a bowl of soup. The soup was so cold the must have dipped it out of a container in the fridge. The bread stick I ate was cold and under cooked. My steak was an okay cut of meat, but it was over cooked. At least the wine was good. I would not go back again.

This place was great! Excellent steak without being too salty, perfectly cooked, tender, flavorful, seasoned, marbled,,, everything! Prices were fair but on the higher end. Salad was crisp and fresh. Bread was fresh and warm. Service was excellent because it was slow. Only minor complaint was sitting close to the rowdy bar suffocating any romantic ambiance.

Wow, seriously...This place has now got me hooked on their pizza. Let me tell you, it was kind of on my mind since I first tried their pizza specials two weeks ago and I decided to go back this weekend (okay, so I kind of planned it). Now, it was just me and my boy but I still wanted two pizzas. I ordered the pepperoni and tomato (their tomatoes are diced romas, and were very fresh and juicy the first time) and for the second pizza, I chose chicken as one topping and then bacon popped out of my mouth, accidentally by the way. Then I had a thought...I just made a chicken and bacon/ceasar pizza recently - so why not here? I also asked for a different sauce (there was about four choices by the way) and was about to have garlic-oil, but decided on ranch sauce (basically a chicken bacon ranch pizza). The waiter also mentioned that it may be able to come out as their actual 'chicken bacon ranch' pizza with the green onions and tomatoes on it. I had to remind him a couple times that I just wanted the special, so if it was just chicken and bacon that was just fine too. But I appreciated his extra thought, I just didn't want to get stuck with a $14.00 bill for that one pizza, vs. the $5.00 special price. Well out came our hot and beautiful pizzas, and the pepperoni and tomato pizza looked and tasted exactly like the first time! I was happy and now confident that their pizzas will always be consistently delicious. WOW...wait a minute......I'm not at the Moose's Tooth, am I? Noooo, this crust is too heavenly soft to be the Moose's Tooth. However, this pizza I was eating was soooo close to the taste, except more of a heavy hand on the cheeses, here at Pepper mill. I must say though, it did show up as their actual chicken bacon ranch pizza (the server mentioned they did end up giving me the better pizza, still for the special price - yum!). It was SO good. The chicken was thick, moist cuts of chicken breast meat, thicker than at Moose's Tooth too. There was lots of green onions tossed on top, and the diced romas, and lots of mozzarella and a bit of cheddar cheese too. Also, the bacon was very finely chopped and so perfectly crispy and nice amounts of it as well. I am going to go out on a limb here and say for me, I liked it better than the version at the Moose's Tooth. The only thing is that they only have Alaskan Brewing Co. beers, and not other Alaskan brands. What really impressed me about eating at Platinum Jaxx's one day, was that they carried Moose's Tooth beer. It was nice to enjoy a cloudy, apple beer for around $4.50 all the way downtown. I still haven't tried the $10.00 New York strip steak dinner with fries here at Pepper mill, but that may be the next review from me for this establishment. I'm so in love with their Sunday pizza specials though, that I might always order them instead or at least until the offer goes away. I am definitely going to try their Pomegranite Margarita next time too (I love the ones at Simon & Seafort's, especially during Happy Hour from 4-6 pm when they're $4.00 ! ). I'll have to see if it lives up to what I've tried elsewhere (S&S's). Well, until next time Anchorage! Final Thought/Note: I noticed a banner out front of the Pepper mill on this last trip that read: "Pizza Happy Hours, every day (I think), Buy one pizza and get a second pizza Free". I think the hours said from 5-7pm daily..might want to call and check first. That would also be a great deal and a daily one at that. The chick/bacon/ranch pizza was around $13.99 for the regular size, so that would be $7 bucks a pop.
