I had my first visit tonight. I had the shrimp po boy, my dining partner had the andouille po boy, we both selected the potato salad as the side. The gentleman that seated and served us was great! I love the home like feel to the place, and he greeted us "welcome to my home". I felt this was a nice touch. The food. I loved my po boy, the shrimp were plentiful with a nice texture and flavor. The bread was nice and fresh, and the potato salad was good as well. My partner's po boy was sublime. I snuck a bite, and the smoky sausage was very, very good. I will be returning!

We've always struggled to find more than just a few quality places to eat in Anchorage. Meanwhile, the Gumbo House was a pleasant surprise. Having eaten at Orso and Glacier Brewhouse (two good places to eat downtown) many times we searched for something new and found this what looks to be a former house now turned small restaurant. At first, we were hesitant. This is far from Louisiana. However, photos online looked tempting enough to try. Fortunately, the flavor rivaled what was captured in photos. The Gumbo House is a much better than average place to eat in Anchorage that delivers friendly service and entrees that would hold their own in New Orleans (and yes, I've been to NOLA and all over Louisiana a dozen times). Even thousands of miles away, the Gumbo House has done a great job at bringing Cajun flavor to Alaska. Gumbo House is a great place for lunch or dinner. While their menu is limited the items on it are dynamite. Everything comes in a bowl or bucket. A bowl is filling enough. However, if you have a huge appetite a bucket will more than stuff you. We ordered the Shrimp Creole, Shrimp Gumbo and Jambalaya. All had wonderful rues. And, none of them tasted like they were made from a box. The ingredients tasted fresh an the portions are more than fair. In fact, even a smaller bowl (the bowl, rather than the bucket) had half a dozen shrimp in it. The Gumbo is worth ordering. It comes with shrimp, loads of andouille sausage and fresh okra. Very good. The jambalaya is filled with huge chunks of shrimp, chicken, andouille and more. In short, if you're coming to eat here this isn't much more (blackened catfish and a few other things) to choose from, but there's a reason why this place is called the Gumbo House, it's their specialty and they do it well. If you have a craving for Cajun, this spot may be the best West of the Rockies.

Ambiance was great! Don't be fooled by the exterior, you'll feel like you're dining in a friendly Southern's house. Service: was very friendly. Food: was A-OK. I was expecting things to be spicier. Maybe that's my problem though, I love extremely hot/spicy food. I added lots of hot sauce, but everything still tasted kind of "tame" to me. I got a half-Po Boy/half-soup special. They were good but I wasn't really blown away. The Po Boy had a bit too much bread for my liking. I'll come back and try something else. I'm no expert in Cajun food so perhaps my expectations are just misaligned.

Excellent little place to grab a bowl of gumbo or jambalaya! The restaurant doesn't look like mucj on the outside and it's certainly not fancy, but the flavor is absolutely delicious! I ordered the jambalaya and it had a wonderful tomatoey taste to it. It was enough spicy for me but I can see how others would probably say it is not spicy enough. My husband ordered the kitchen sink gumbo and it was also very tasty. The gumbo has more of a pepper taste than the tomato taste of the jambalaya. There was a generous amount chicken, shrimp, and sausage too! One thing I think could be better is the bowl that this is placed in. I felt like both the gumbo and jambalaya would've been much more amazing and comfortable to eat if they had been in a rounder or larger bowl. There was little room for me to move the fork around without spilling rice. If you have the northern lights book you'll save plenty with their coupon! :-)

Came back for the jambalaya. Honestly? Even better than the gumbo in my opinion! They were pretty evenly matched, but I felt the flavor was more distinct in the jambalaya as it was more tomato-based. I got another jalapeno cornbread, always good :)

As a person who loooooves gumbo and has had her fair share of excellent gumbo, this place does not cut it. Sorry. The service was great and the staff was super friendly and accommodating, but the gumbo was MEH. I order the kitchen sink gumbo. It lacked flavor big time and adding salt did not help. The only thing I could actually taste were the oysters. My mom got the catfish and red beans and rice. She wasn't too impressed with her meal either. The only thing I can say I like were the corn muffins. Those were yummy. I really want to like this place b/c is has a homey feel and the hospitality is great, but the food misses the mark for me.

I have been here a handful of times, twice dining in and twice dining out. The only reason I have given this place a 4 instead of 5 star is the dining experience. Unless you're towards the back of the restaurant, there's always a cold draft coming through the door and frankly, the furnishings could use an upgrade. I believe the restaurant is actually a conversion from an old home. Now, as for the food. It's delicious! The gumbo is made with a very deep and dark roux, the depth of flavor is just what one would expect from a laborious and attentively made roux. The okra was not at all overcooked and tasted like it had to have been fresh and not out of a pre-frozen bag. I like that they slice their andouille sausage thin and the chicken is plentiful. If you are looking for a more interesting gumbo experience, go for the "kitchen sink" - it includes oysters and shrimp as well. The po-boys are also worth a nod. I have had the blackened shrimp and the BBQ pork po-boy and both totally hit the spot. The shrimp was cooked perfectly layered with just the right amount of blackening spices and accompaniments on a crisp and chewy hoagie roll. Same with the BBQ pork - and the BBQ sauce was a perfect balance of smoke and sweet. I need to venture out and try some of the other po's inc. the catfish and oyster&shrimp. I did have a blackened shrimp salad one time and didn't find it to be anything particularly special, though it was fresh and fairly plentiful. Great one of a kind spot in Anchorage for comfort food on a cold day - just get takeout or you may find yourself chilled further by the constantly opening door and drafty establishment. Although I do suppose much of the charm could be taken from dining in a converted older home..

This was the first time we tried gumbo. We ordered the chicken gumbo without any sausage meat. It is exactly same as sindhi kadhi that we make almost every other week. I love the one we make at home. The only difference was this had chicken. Never going for gumbo anymore.

  • Stephen H.

I had the kitchen sink gumbo and the jalapeno cornbread. I found both to be extremely bland and flavorless. I really wanted to like it, but I just didn't...

I ordered the Blacked Shrimp Po-Boy. It was a pretty big 8" sandwich, the bread was soft, the lettuce and pickles were crunchy, and the shrimp was spicy! My side was the cole-slaw, the server suggested I get it instead of the potato salad because they "make it fresh, in-house every day", however, it was brownish and pretty bland tasting. It looked like they went to the store and bought the pre-package cole-slaw, threw 4 raisins on top, and called it "home-made". To say the least, I was a pretty disappointed about my side, but the sandwich was spot on. My boyfriend ordered the Gumbo, with a side of jalapeño corn bread. The corn bread was decent and the gumbo was pretty good, a little on the bland side, we ended up pointing a lot of Louisiana hot sauce in it. Both items were pretty standard issue, not too bad but nothing too noteworthy. I think for what you get, it's a little on the pricier side of things; before tip our meal cost us $24.00 (Shrimp Po-Boy + Gumbo + 2 Waters).

This unassuming little house, painted Pepto Bismol pink and containing very little parking, is home to the greatest po' boy north of NO. Seriously. I've never even had the title dish at the Gumbo House because the fried shrimp po' boy is so wonderfully satisfying. Crisp, panko fried shrimp in a soft and slightly chewy hoagie style roll with housemade remoulade that has a slight horseradish kick to it...mmmmm. I love and consider myself a connoisseur of southern food and would highly recommend a trip to the Gumbo House for anyone in Anchorage--local and tourist alike!

  • Antonio Z.

The food tastes exactly how you would expect this New Orleans style of of food to taste. From the Po Boy to the salads, everything is on point. My only reason for giving it four stars is because I'm not a fan of this style of food and nothing made me want to change my mind. However, if you like this style of cuisine, you're going to live the place! On a side note: This restaurant is a little house and the whole thing truly adds to the dining experience, it felt very original, as if I was transported back to the south.

How I miss you, and love you, and crave you, Gumbo House. There is nothing quite like your Blackened Shrimp Po Boy out here in all of Los Angeles, let alone Southern California. I wish you would consider opening a joint down here as all the local Cajun/Creole joints are beyond subpar. They just plain old SUCK. You on the other hand deliver one of the finest po boy sandwiches I have ever laid my mouth on. I would consider taking another trip to Alaska just to savor another bite of those remarkable flavors. Ahhh... come to me!!!!!

"It's the Real Deal." This recommendation from a relative who lived in Louisiana for years sent me hunting for dinner at the downtown location. As I have never been to LA- no Mardi Gras beads for this gal- I can only comment on 'good food' not authenticity. I grew up with family friends from Louisiana who were great cooks & so red beans & rice with blackened Copper River salmon became staples of all our camping trips. Gumbo House is 5-star for Alaska: the food is fresh & it's really damn tasty. As other Yelpers have said, this is not a fancy joint, but if you've traveled the South and visited the famous eateries, they are mostly converted old houses, too. It's not stylish nor spotless, however I can overlook all of that for delicious dark gumbo. Oyster po' boy, blackened shrimp caesar salad and corn muffins were better than we can make at home. And isn't that why we go out to eat food like this? To savor flavors we just can't do justice to on our own stovetops? Service was friendly and gracious; prices were spot on. The silverware was spotless even though the tablecloths were not. There were a couple side rooms that are cozy for small groups. I think it's worth a stop. Dump hot sauce on your food (a little mild), and chill out.

Meh, this was my first time eating Southern food, it was okay. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The restaurant inside was clean and nice. & parking, location, & accessibility are convenient. The food was okay, though I hated the crab cakes and remoulade sauce, + the corn stuff that came on the side was too spicy. The lemonade tasted like it came from powder. But the jambalaya was fantastic- delicious big shrimp, and the sausage was flavorful, loved it! I also ordered a BBQ pork po-boy, which tasted decent. I Loved the bread, and the pickle on the sandwich complimented it well. My husband got the angel hair pasta and enjoyed it. I probably won't be returning, however- not too much a fan of southern food. If I did like it though, I'm sure this place would be the place to go.

No, no, no. If gumbo has a half of inch OIL on it then you'll love this place. The gumbo was mostly rice with a little meat and okra. The flavor was non existent in both the chicken/shrimp gumbo and the house gumbo. The oysters in the house gumbo were terrible.

  • Juliette G.

There are fancier restaurants in Anchorage, and there are probably better ones, but for the price and availability, you simply can't beat the Gumbo House! Every time I'm in the city I just have to stop in. The atmosphere is casual, the staff is friendly, and the food is fabulous!!! That's really all I can say. I've had the "kitchen sink", crab cakes, chicken wings, and potato salad, but everything pales in comparison to the jambalaya. Outside of New Orleans I've never had better. Since I tried that, I haven't ordered anything else every time I'm in. Their portions are perfect too, a bowl of jambalaya and a corn muffin is just about perfect for everyone I've eaten with.

  • Rachel S.

I guess this place used to be a house, but the food and service are great!! we got both jambalya and gumbo. I like the jambalya better... more tangy, but both were delish with lots of meat. The wait staff was also very warm and attentive. It's small, but there are a lot of tables in differnt "rooms" and very clean. I will come back for sure! I'm sure it will be even better when it gets colder!

  • Don E.

Don't let the small pink house fool you. This is a must visit. The Blackened Shrimp Po Boy is outstanding!! Spices are spot on. Also had the Jambalaya soup that had Andouille Sausage, chicken and shrimp. All other ingredients combined to make it one of the best tasting I've ever had.

    (5)
  • Tammy G.

Some stuff is great, some........not so much Their house salad is the best I've had in Anchorage! But the gumbo? I order po-boys, red beans and rice, salad. They are quick!

  • Levi P.

Adorable little place and this is weird--even though the gumbo tasted kind of burnt, it was also DELICIOUS. Maybe that's what dark roux means? Anyway, fantastic food and that guy Fernando was so lovely and nice! Made good eye contact like he genuinely wanted people to be enjoying themselves, he wasn't just asking because he was supposed to as a host.

    (4)
  • Aj H.

Over priced and just ok. We ordered the jambalaya, chicken gumbo, potato salad and corn muffins. The jambalaya was good, the gumbo tasted burnt, $4.50 for a scoop of potato salad, and $2.50 for a small corn muffin made the experience somewhat disappointing. If you're in Alaska and dying for Cajun food, try somewhere else.

Great low-key, cute eatery. It's in a house off a busy street, has it's own parking lot, and some really good po'boys! We got the shrimp and oyster po'boy, and it was a generous portion with battered fried seafood heaping out of the sandwich. The bread was so soft and on-point, a nice contrast to the crispy ingredients. I like the pickles inside because of the extra tang in the flava profile. The salad was fresh and crunchy. I really can't stop saying good things about this! Oh and the jambalaya is ok. Lighter than most, very tomatoey. I would have liked more heat. It doesn't hold up to southern food but not a bad try! And a nice change of pace for Alaska. Overall, glad I came!

Surprisingly delicious food. Ordered the jambalaya and catfish po boy. Highly recommend both. Also, had a Caesar salad -- wouldn't go for it again. The only wish: warm cornbread. Excited to go back.

So GROSS! How does this spot have 4 stars??! The food was so nasty! The gumbo tasted burnt, the chicken wings were absolutely disgusting. What the hell? Nothing good to say, so the END.

The first time I went to the Gumbo House, my husband and I split a bowl of gumbo and a shrimp poboy. The sandwich was delicious, but the gumbo tasted burnt. I'm not sure if the rue was just cooked too long but something was "off" Recently a coworker ordered lunch and I decided to try the jambalaya and I am so glad I did. There's a bit of a bite (heat) to it, but it's not overpowering and really adds something to the flavor. I noticed, the second time we ordered lunch, the jambalaya was still really good, but with not as much heat, and it really sort of needs it. Also, one of the ladies I work with ordered the red beans and rice and found it to be rather bland. We all tried it and found the same thing. Very disappointing. All in all I'm a fan, I just sort of expect inconsistency in flavors.

  • Anasooya G.

One of my worst experiences...I would have given a negative five star if it was possible. We ordered blackened catfish and what they served was a tilapia. Wow!!! The chicken gumbo was bitter, may be because the spices were over cooked. In both our items the rice served was tough and hard...reason? May be either undercooked or old-frozen-microwave heated... When we asked the server that it was not catfish, she looked confused and went off... Didnot come back and we had to wait 10 min after finishing the disgusting food to pay the bill...

I'm gonna go with "It's okay". My socks were not blown off but I'm going to politely reserve judgement for when I come back and order a Po'boy. I should have read the reviews closer. I read "Kitchen Sink" and thought "that's pretty much what I like, a hodgepodge of everything". I was wrong. It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but to be honest, I don't much care for oysters AND the brown sauce is a little on the harsh side for me. Fear not, I threw a bunch of hot sauce in it and got my eat on. I also ordered too much, so I ended up wasting about half. I should've brought a friend, but then I realize, I don't know anybody here! Ha! I'll come back and try the Po'boy next time and letcha know how it stacks up!

  • Gene M.

Very quick service and delicious Po boys. We sat down and had our hot Po boys in about 10 minutes. I enjoyed my fried oyster and shrimp Po boy with all the fixings. The seafood was hot and the roll fresh. I really dig this place.

I had lunch today and the food is super greasy and did not have any taste hoy Fui a comer por primera vez a este lugar Los vasos de agua sucios. La comida super grasosa y sin ningun sabor Los empleados. Nada amigables. Definitely no vuelvo a este lugar

  • Madi H.

I came here alone and had the kitchen sink gumbo and a glass of red wine. While the service isn't he best in the business, everyone was very friendly! The gumbo was delicious, though next time I'll either get shrimp or oyster, I didn't enjoy the chicken that much. I sort of expected tasteless bay shrimp and gummy canned oysters but the oysters we're fresh and tender and the shrimp was crisp and juicy! I got a corn muffin to go with the gumbo and it was the perfect addition to the meal. Yum! I'll definitely be back!!

  • Fisherman E.

Wonderful food and owners. I come here pretty regularly for the jambalaya. Nice home like atmosphere (probably bc it was a home at one point). Parking is behind the pink shack, dont park else where bc an engineering firm seems to own every other spot and getting towed is a possibility.

  • Gretchen A.

All I can say is the Shrimp Po Boys are DA BOMB! Both the blackened shrimp and the bbq shrimp are so delicious you'll want another bite before you finish the one in your mouth! The owner lady has always given us friendly and prompt service. Two thumbs up!

  • Jacob C.

As a Southerner I wasn't expecting much. I was wrong. The kitchen sink gumbo and jalapeño corn muffins were amazing. From the andouille to the oysters to the okra it was fantastic. My only complaint is I never got a refill. Never even asked. Other than that it would be 5 stars. I will be back.

First time going here and bought a lunch special. I been in Alaska for 2 1/2 years and never went here. Although parking is a pain in the neck it was well worth it.!

Great food, great service, and very reasonable prices. It's great getting a good bowl (or bucket) of Jambalaya, Gumbo, or Red beans and rice this far north. Quick fix for the homesick ;)

  • Rae W.

I had to talk my husband into going to this place, so I wanted it to be as good as some of the reviews I had read. It was so disappointing! Granted, we eat dinner at the senior citizen hour of about 4 p.m., so maybe, some things were not "at their optimal best" yet because they hadn't cooked long enough. I had gumbo and my husband had a Po Boy. Neither one of us really liked our food; it was just okay.

Being from Louisiana when I travel to different parts of the world, I like to try what they call Gumbo. I never expect it to taste like home, but a least close to it. I was very disappointed with the Shrimp Gumbo. It tasted burnt and had no flavor. I haven't tried anything else, but don't try the Gumbo.

  • Hans B.

I never thought I'd find the best gumbo I have ever had in Alaska! Emeril has nothing on these guys! Excellent gumbo and the fried oyster po' boy was great. Do yourself a favor...eat here!

  • Michelle M.

The food is so good and the atmosphere is cute & bright. I went for dinner on a Saturday and it wasn't too crowded, which was really nice - but surprising for how good the food is. I had jambalaya & a jalapeño corn muffin. Both were amazing. They have beer and wine, but the wine selection isn't very good - one Chardonnay and one merlot. I will definitely be back!

Quiet little place off the main strip in the downtown Anchorage area. Small, simple seating area in an old house converted to a commercial kitchen and rooms for tables. I wasn't sure what to expect since I have done the New Orleans fare, and make jambalaya of my own. I was pleasantly surprised and satisfied with their jambalaya! Plenty of sausage and chicken, with the usual 3-4 shrimp. Soupier than how I make mine, but there was a definite amount of heat in the background of the dish. Subtle, but effective. I was, early on, tempted to supplement the heat with pepper sauce but opted to refrain and let the chef's wisdom reign. Glad I did! I also tried their corn muffin with jalapenos ... I asked them to warm it for me and give me a little butter with it. Not bad, not bad. I was tempted to try the bread pudding, but decided to save the calories. Marco, the waiter, was efficient and engaging. Plenty of extra water and coffee when either got low. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food and service.

I had always picked the plain shrimp po'boy sandwich, but this time, I was adventurous and tried the barbecue shrimp sandwich. WAYYYYY better! I usually also get the bowl of jambalaya - which is also pretty good. The two together was a pricey $20. And the website confirmed this price. But when I got there I found rates had gone up about 8%. In future I think I'll skip the jambalaya - just too pricey to get both. (I mentioned to them they should correct their website)

  • Davod L.

Good but not authentic cajun. Im from Indian Bayou LA and I know my gumbo. The gumbo is good except the okra is al dente. I could not eat it (the okra). Okra is stewed for about 30 minutes and no longer ropey then added to the gumbo. Had the jambalaya which is not jambalaya. Jambalaya is made by adding raw rice to the stock or sauce and absorbs the flavors as the rice cooks.

  • Zach H.

Very unassuming. It looks like a cottage from outside, but there's some surprisingly good southern food there.

    (4)
  • Beth I.

I'm definitely no expert on gumbo, but it warmed me from the inside out and was super hearty, which is what I imagined a good gumbo would do to you! I had the chicken gumbo and a blackened chicken po' boy. (As I write this, I am getting hungry thinking about that side of cole slaw and generous portions of cajun flavored chicken.) I ordered a small bowl of gumbo and a sandwich and it would have definietly fed at least 2 people! I made two meals out of it instead! Who says you can't have gumbo for breakfast the next day?! Kinda pricey, came out to $20 for the meal, but when you think of it in terms of 2 meals, then it's a pretty good deal. I wasn't too sure about the pink house that houses the restaurant, but once I stepped inside I realized how quaint the place is! I loved it!

We stopped by late afternoon and the place was pretty much empty. This might have been because no one else was dumb enough to risk their life trying to get across the icy parking lot. It was a death trap. However, it was definitely worth the risk because the food was out of this world! We had the blackened shrimp po boy and a bowl of the kitchen sink gumbo. On first bite of the po boy, I was in heaven. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and it had just the right amount of spice. The gumbo was also wonderful. Our waiter was nice and service was excellent. Several others also made it into the restaurant while we were there. Obviously word is out that this place is worth risking a broken limb... But seriously guys, you might want to put down some gravel.

Recently was introduced to the Gumbo House by a good friend. I will have to say I was blown away by how amazing their food was. It was hot, fresh, and ultimately delicious. First time I was there I had the regular shrimp Po Boy, the proportions were amazing and it was loaded with shrimp. I decided to try half the Po Boy and a cup of jambalaya the second time I went and the jambalaya was so good that I had purchased a bucket size to take home. Staff is so polite and their service is very timely. I will recommended this place to anyone and everyone.

  • Dallas S.

Excellent! Cajun food is not for everyone, but it is for me. I lived in Louisiana for 9 years and can tell you this is authentic. I strongly suggest the kitchen sink gumbo but make sure you enjoy a strong dark roux and lots of meat in your gumbo because that's what you are going to get. The blackened catfish was amazing as well. Both together was way too much food and I rarely can't finish my meal. Just the bowl of gumbo would have been enough but you try looking around the quaint dining area at everyone's delicious looking meals and not want to try everything. Alaska is a unique place and this place is unique for Alaska.

Very good, fresh food made just the way you want it. Each order is made exactly how you want it. I got the Jambalaya made fresh just for me - spicy just right and lots of rice on top. Tried a bit of their Po Boys and loved them all - best was the shrimp! Great service and very nice people came in !

During a recent trip to Anchorage with my daughter, we wanted something different. We looked at the gumbo house and yes, it satisfied our tourist appetite. She had the kitchen sink and I had the chicken gumbo with corn bread! Like the other review, it was PLENTY. I couldn't finish mine. My daughter had the sink, and maybe because of the name, she said her's tasted like soapy and bitter. I tasted it and it didn't taste like it to me. Amosphere: quaint and its really made for couples or 4 adult max, otherwise you'd have to marry tables together and it'll make it for a tight fit. Share the Corn Bread it's big Good eats!

My fiance and I recently moved to Anchorage, Alaska and decided to explore the eats around the area. We found Gumbo House on Yelp. I give this place a five-star because the food are absolutely delicious. Both times we've ordered we had to get it to go; 1) the place was about to close and 2) lunch time was crazy busy. Hopefully, we will get a chance and be able to eat there. =P Both time I had the Jambalaya, I love it. My fiance had ordered a Kitchen Sink, he said it was okay and probably got the end of the pot. He'll probably try that again. The second time he ordered the Blacken chicken po-boys and said it was good. We also tried their corn muffins and bread pudding dessert. Yummy them both! =D We will definitely drop by the restaurant from time to time. =D

This place is on a short list of establishments that make me really grateful I get to eat in Anchorage. Falafel King, Yak and Yeti. Ichiban. and GUMBO HOUSE. Places that are obsessive on quality food from a very "hard-to-do-well" type of cuisine. Everyone does gumbo, and everyone does it terrible. This place gets the roux real dark before using fresh ingredients to finish the gumbo. I always do the Po' Boys. They are the best in town.

In Anchorage, as well as many other cities other than New Orleans, this earns a "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" Nothing personifies the city better than a small business with very kind business owners, doing what they love with pride and excellence. Gustavo told me he's not from New Orleans, but you could have fooled me. Other than the Jambalaya, which most certainly isn't Jambalaya (but is absolutely delicious), I would have sworn the masterminds grew up in the Bayou. In fact, they learned their trade working in kitchens around Anchorage; the family perfected some amazing Cajun dishes and decided to go out on their own. The gumbo is made with a fantastic, dark roux. I prefer mine with shrimp and sausage, but there's also the kitchen sink for those who love it all. It's to die for; plus I don't have to travel all the way to the Double Musky for a respectable version. Thanks, Gumbo House, for cutting down my gas bill. The non-Jambalaya Jambalaya reminds me of a Cajun Cioppino. The tomato broth is fantastic; so good, in fact, that I forget the Jambalaya isn't authentic. It tastes authentic. And I'm pretty sure something like this is being made in New Orleans with a different name. I've yet to find it, but I will. The po-boys are fantastic. Shrimp is my favorite, both blackened and fried. Their kitchen is small, but the shrimp are nice and clean and not fishy!! It can be done, Anchorage! Overall, this is an establishment worthy of House calls. You won't regret it. Note: They are very busy at lunch hour due to the working lunch crowd. If you have flexible hours and don't mind waiting, I'd recommend holding off between noon and 2pm.

They serve an honest po'boy up in the frozen hinterlands. The key? *Crunch*. Real bread means a real po'boy. And the gumbo was rich in sea bugs and everything else. Their special was dirt cheap compared to the amount of filling food. Yeah, sure, it may not be as "authentic" as a Louisiana home meal, but it's far closer than some of the schlock served near the New Orleans convention hotels. Plus quick and cheap. If I were up here during the actual cold season (not summer), I'd probably live at this place.

I LOVE THIS PLACE. And I have no affiliation with them. I just went to New Orleans on business. These guys are BETTER than anything I had there. Seriously they are THAT good. Now I was concerned about writing a rav review on them as I kind of like how accessible it is. The place is so unassuming but what they produce in their tiny kitchen is the best food I've ever had in Anchorage. I'm excited to watch how they explode.

Has the Kitchen Sink Gumbo and the Chicken Gumbo for dinner, wow, what a meal! Wasn't expecting gumbo this good in Alaska, but was quite pleasantly surprised. Glad I took my friend's recommendation. We carried out this time, but plan on visiting the restaurant soon.

Not Louisiana bayou-level of splendid but still very good in its own right. If you're a fan of seafood, go with a bowl of the kitchen sink and split it with someone because it's a hefty portion. Pair it with either an Alaskan White or Amber beer. Also, if they ask if you'd like bread to go with it, it's not complimentary.

I gotta say, this place is cool. Awesome vibe and decor, very chill and casual, bright colors and silhouettes of jazz musicians on the walls. Service was pretty fast and the guys are pretty friendly too. I tried their blackened chicken po boy. Huge, it's massive really, and really tasty for pretty cheap! I had their gumbo special as well, and it was ok. Perhaps I'm not a huge gumbo person, but it was a little intense for me; maybe too much going on with the spices and stuff, felt like I was eating a pot of black pepper sauce. I hear the jambalaya is better though, and it's cheap enough that I would totally come back and check it out another time (whenever I haul my butt back to Alaska).

At gumbo house, I had the traditional dark roux gumbo with shrimp and chicken and an oyster po boy with butter and pickles. The service was great. They were very accommodating and meticulous about getting my order right. The food was good- absolutely no complaints about the food. If you're interested in how it holds up compared to the real deal (my mom is a new orleans native and we visit family there frequently) it's a pretty good contender especially for being this far away from the real thing. Nothing will ever beat nawlins down home cookin' but if you can't quite make it there, gumbo house in anchorage is very close to it.

I really like their gumbo. I usually get the kitchen sink with a corn muffin. They make a nice smoky roux. One complaint is that I could do without the oysters. Too chewy. I know you're just supposed to let it slide down your gullet without chewing but that is really hard for me to do. When cook asked how it was I said it was good but not a fan of the oyster he reminded me it was an aphrodisiac. Odd.

Cajun in Anchorage? I love Cajun food and on vacation opted to try the Gumbo House for my birthday dinner. The gumbo was good, the jambalaya better. Not much atmosphere but no crazed tourists crowds either! Tasty and reasonable! Happy Birthday to me!!!

Gave it a try the other day after wanting to eat here for quite a while. Not exactly what I expected. It was fairly run down and everything seemed a little dirty and greasy . Ordered the chicken gumbo. First time having the dark brown roux. Just wasn't for me. I'm sure it's authentic and good regional representation, but it just tasted a little too salty and bitter. Might try a po'boy, but the cleanliness was a turn off. On a positive note, the staff was very friendly.

WOW! This unassuming little pink house is an absolute treasure. The vibe is relaxed and the food is OUTSTANDING! My wife had the very good shrimp gumbo with a jalepeno cornbread muffin. I had the blackened shrimp po' boy and it was fantastic. Every element of this sandwich was perfect. The french bread was the perfect blend of crusty and chewy. The lettuce was fresh and slaw sauce was very good. The star of the sandwich was the amazing blackened shrimp. Not only were they perfectly cooked, the blackening seasoning was out of this world! We've eaten all over the globe, and we've been to New Orleans many times. This was the best po' boy I've ever eaten. Period.

Laid back atmosphere good service, but my shrimp gumbo tasted burnt. I'm from the south an that was definitely not gumbo. I'm willing to give another try though

Gumbo House hasn't yet cease to disappoint. Jumbalaya, gumbo, po boys...you name it. They've got it. I haven't yet been to New Orleans but this is some dang good food. Started out with the blackened chicken wings at $6.50 a pop. Were absolutely delicious, but, could have used a side of celery to accompany. I haven't yet had something here that has disappointed..........I tried the "Kitchen Sink" -- at around $9 a bowl. It's a uber hearty portion of chicken, andouille sausage, oysters, and shrimp. Fantastic. Served with big scoop of rice. Don't forget the jalapeno corn bread muffin to accompany at $1.29. Also sampled the blackened shrimp po-boy ($8). As Becca C noted, it was awesome. Huge, filling, tasty.......wow. Beer and wine is $5 here. Not a huge selection, but just enough. Owner is super cool -- not quite sure how a Mexican from Zacatecas got started cooking up Southern food, but I'm sure it's a good story. All in all, unpretentious, relatively cheap for Alaska, super filling, go-to spot when you're in the mood for southern eats and no waiting.......

I know I wrote that Tommy's Burger Stop made the best fries shrimp po'boy, but....but....this place has proven to be equal, and cheaper. They are good!! Bread is crunchy outside & nice & soft inside, nice helping of perfectly cooked fried shrimps. It is one of the best hangover sandwiches I've had so far! I haven't yet ventured past the fried po'boys, I'm pretty much hooked on them, but maybe hopefully one day I'll try something else on the menu. Love the pink & green house & the inside.

Ay Hombre! This place is full of español, despite the authentic Louisiana feel. Simple, no-nonsense atmosphere with some classic 70's rock radio on, and plain tables adorn with Louisiana hot sauce and a one-panel paper menu. Cheap, filling, and delicious. Unless you LOVE oysters, stay away from those, as the taste is over powering. My favorite is the jambalaya with shrimp. A favorite of mine, and often frequented by military.

The gumbo house is an off-the-beaten-path gem near downtown main street. We decided to try it out based on the yelp reviews and were not disappointed. It is within walking distance of the 5th street mall and the convention center. I had a half blackened shrimp po boy and cup of jambalya. Yum! The sandwich was very spicy, so be prepared. We also had the calamari po boy (daily special), kitchen sink gumbo, and the catfish and beans. The only complaint, and the reason for the 4 stars, Was the slightly burnt and bitter taste of the gumbo. Overall this restaurant is a must try.

I moved to Anchorage about a month ago and have been searching out places to eat ever since. I found this place by sitting across from it while watching the 4th of July parade. It is very good. Their po-boys and jambalaya/gumbo/etoufee's are all escellent. They have a daily lunch special everyday that gets you a half po-boy and cup of goodness for like $10.25. It is an excellent way to try 2 things at once and figure out what you like without committing whole hog. First time - Fried Chicken po-boy and jambalaya Seconde time - Blackened chicken po-boy and shrimp etoufee All excellent! I went back twice in the same week and I will continue to go back until i have tried everything. Highly recommended. And they have parking which can be a challenge in DT Anchorage.

I order weekly catered lunches from these guys, and they are the office favorite and have broken a couple diets. Always tasty, not to mention quick and easy to order from; they know us and what we like. I am a big fan of the jumbalaya.

Wow... This place is awesome! I remember visiting family in Louisiana as a kid each year and eating all of the great Cajun food. This place is spot on. The po boys are way too good and the sides complement the meal perfectly! Did I mention the gumbo? It is great! I highly recommend the kitchen sink. Anyway, I shouldn't say too much more because the parking can be a little challenging and I want to make sure I can always get in. haha

I had the Bar-B-Q shrimp Po Boy and a bowl of kitchen sink gumbo without oysters. Both items were excellent. The Po Boy had plenty of shrimp and crunchy fresh lettuce. The gumbo was thick with chicken, shrimp, and andouille sausage plus fresh okra, and a dark, rich roux seasoned just right. The bowl of gumbo was huge! I hadn't had anything to eat all day but I had to take half of the gumbo home, I couldn't eat it all. Another great little restaurant gem in Anchorage.

What a little gem. Menu is not extensive but everything is great quality and very reasonably priced. Owners have done a fine job with an old house but I'd eat in a dumpster for their gumbo. Get the bucket of gumbo and take some home; 5 hours later and I'm wishing I'd had some leftovers but it was all so good. Did the po-boy as well and it was likewise impressive.

We found Gumbo House on Yelp and were not disappointed! We enjoy the jambalaya, gumbo and po' boys! We've been back many times and even introduced our friends to this place. I have only been at dinner time and never found it too busy, but I've heard it can get pretty crowded at lunch time.

Have had the gumbo and the po boy. Both were good, but the gumbo is a little oily. I do like the deep brown, cajun roux and how thick they make it as well, but the flavor of the roux seems to drown out the vegetables, meat and seafood in it. Corn muffins are pretty good, but a bit dry. I need to go back and try out some more of their dishes. Nice for a sit down meal, but Dossman's Cajun Kitchen re-opened in Northway Mall and I think they are superior for a quick lunch. Definitely better prices and I like their gumbo more. To each their own, though and Anchorage can use two Cajun places. Definitely check out both to see which you like best.

This is the cutest little house; bright and cheery decor, really close to downtown with their own parking lot. I tried the blackened shrimp po-boy and my god, it was delicious. This was the best po boy I've ever had; the sauce was sweet and spicy, the bread was fresh, and the shrimp juicy. I'll certainly be back to try the gumbo...and more!

  • Mel H.

I can see I am going against the trend here, but we just weren't that impressed. Yes the gumbo roux is browned, but the night I had it it tasted burnt. It had also split, and the goopy flour with the heavy oil separation wasn't appealing. Crab cakes were completely lackluster (terrible actually) and a waste of money. Po boy was tasty but nothing exceptional. If I were to go back I would get a po boy, but that would be it, and the po boy wasn't great enough to warrant a return trip.

Dumbos. The restaurant is like a house so you feel like you're being a rude a-hole coming to a friend's just to eat (just my perspective) but it's cool. The chicken wings aren't that flavorful w/o that mystery sauce and the chicken Gumbo was a tad bit bland. The only thing that sparked desires was that muffin corn bread. Omg it was like crack, I don't do drugs, so that speaks for itself.

I love their shrimp po boy sandwich...didn't like the potato salad. Next time I'll try the coleslaw...

My husband and I visited Anchorage in 2007 and found this place completely by accident while driving back to our hotel. The food is absolutely amazing and we ended up eating dinner at Gumbo House 4 out of the 5 nights we were in Alaska. The owner is incredibly friendly and spoke with us each time we ate there. If you go, make sure that you get the "kitchen sink" portion of the gumbo because anything smaller just won't do. I would recommend this place to everyone.

I love this place....my kids love this place....I try to go when it is not full. This place is awesome, a true treat and pretty close to perfection. I had the alligator special (must not b a consistent supply cos it was only the 1 time and I try to make it a point to eat their on a monthly basis. My iced tea did not go dry, they stay on top of their customers and I have never seen an unhappy person leave. Gumbo....yum.....House....yum!!!! Large servings...yum!!!

Though admittedly not very familiar with what cajun or southern food is "supposed" to taste like, I do dig the Gumbo House. Flavors don't seem to overpower and portions are good - always full after leaving. The shrimp po boy is my fave and it's great to see a restaurant that doesn't skimp on the shrimp! lol Great atmosphere - converted houses to restaurants have so much character.

This place was amazing. There was so much food, you won't leave hungry that is for sure. You might have to roll out. It's about 8-15 bucks and so delicious. We were not dissapointed at all.

one of my favorite places in anchorage. the po-boys are pure insanity, and the bbq shrimp is my personal favorite. red beans and rice, corn bread, gumbo, everything. but the money shot is with the po-boys, completely un-eff-withable.

I've never been to Lousiana so I guess I don't know what "authentic" cajun food tastes like but I hope it tastes like this!! The Po Boy is TO DIE FOR and the chicken sink jambalaya is the BOMB! Portions are large (share the sandwich and get a cup of jambalaya) so you can save yourself some money and the need for someone to roll you out in a wheelbarrow if you share. The staff is friendly and there's great ambience. You really do feel like you got invited to someones house for dinner.

this place simply makes the best (and cheapest) food downtown. and there's even parking! well, not a ton but hey take what you can get, right? the gumbo is outstanding. i went there twice a few weeks ago both times getting the specials. once was small friend catfish. the next time was a shrimp po boy. both were spectacular. oh, and the jalepeno cornbread goes great with the gumbo. A+
