After gorging on cruise ship food for a week, we were ready to settle down with the basics. We came across this place and instantly fell in love with it as soon as we walked in. The ladies behind the counter were friendly and enthusiastic! We asked about the oatmeal, and were told it was "killer"! And what a treat: a huge serving of thick cut freshly cooked oats accompanied by brown sugar, raisins, pecans, cranberries, granola and milk! A great cup of mocha in a real mug was a great accompaniment. Free wi-fi. A great locals spot that we were happy to find!

This review is for the drip coffee and overall atmosphere. That being said, I'm excited to return next week for their $2.50 mocha deal on Monday. The drip coffee is smooth, and never turned bitter or tasted burnt. Also, it's only 50 cents for a refill that you get yourself. The coffee mugs are so chic, too. A big plus that they utilize mugs in addition to to-go cups (unlike KB coffee). I didn't try the food goodness, but it all looked tasty. Friendly staff, quick. The seating area is fairly small, but I was able to get a spot on a Friday around 1 pm with an outlet. Finding a parking spot nearby was a bit of a bitch, though. Always busy and bustling, I like the cozy feel of the place. Clean bathroom available for customers. Noisy with nearby conversations, but that's exactly what made it feel alive and buzzing.

Perfect for lunch or just for coffee. I love the atmosphere in here. It's always bustling.

Great coffee, cozy atmosphere, friendly service. Will make this place a regular stop.

Great place, awesome staff and the owner. Good coffee, great quiches, good value when it comes to breakfast items.

I like my coffee....and am always looking for recommendations when I travel. As side street espresso closes early (3 pm really?) this one was 2nd on the list of places to try and get that perfect latte. No flavourings, just a simple coffee. This is ok. Nice ambiance, good spot to relax in.

Great local place. Had two mochas while visiting anchorage. Dog hitching post.

Really sweet little coffee shop. Great spinach and feta quiche and a massive bowl-sized "large" coffee. The pastries look fantastic. Free wifi.

  • Ray M.

Worst wait ever. The lady behind the counter making the drinks is old and slow and constantly has to ask the younger employees for directions. This resulted in a 25 minute wait for a simple mocha.

This place was my first stop when I got to Anchorage. It was super rainy and I was looking for a good wi-fi and coffee. This place definitely has both ! Their AMERICANO is amazing. Staff are really helpful and they also gave me quick tips about the city. I am coming back to Dark Horse for sure before I leave ;-]

I love dark horse coffee! I don't drink coffee, but whenever I'm in downtown I get their redbull smoothies... It's so good! Service is always friendly. It's definitely a hidden gem next to the sandwich shop. But either way it's cute and cozy!

I thought this place was great! It has a very comfortable, relaxed atmosphere and free Wi-Fi, which I really appreciated as a traveler. The coffee was pretty good, and i had a ham and egg bagel which hit the spot too. It's a popular place, so clearly it's onto a good thing.

Their chai tea latte is the best I've ever had. I got it with almond milk, and I can't think of a single thing they can do to make it better. It had the right amount of froth, spice, and sweetness. Definitely not your typical watered down chai. Heaven in a hot cup on a cold Alaskan morning. Be aware it is very sweet though, which is how I like it but not for everyone. We went on a Tuesday morning during the whole Obama conference, which might have thrown a wrench into things because the wait was ridiculously long. Going for lunch was pretty quick though.

I got the acai bowl and my bf got the breakfast sandwich. We played mancala all through our meal and our espressos were smooth. We will return when we are in the area. (The acai bowl lacked any actual flavor but it was ok with the granola)

  • Christina C.

Came here for a bite and WiFi. Wasn't too impressed by the decor / ambiance of the area (the music was actually quite random and distracting) nor was I impressed with what I ordered. I had the acai bowl (mostly because I can't ever say no to a bowl of acai!) and was quite disappointed. The acai probably would've tasted better as a smoothie / with a straw (it was so watered down!). The granola was good with the acai, but there wasn't enough. I ended up tossing half or more than half of it because it was very blah and I wasn't feeling it. I also ordered a zucchini muffin (thank god!) and scarfed that down immediately (I was hungry, it was 3 pm and I hadn't had anything since 8 am!)

Seems like a local hangouts. I ordered a medium mocha and didn't find it anything special. Coffee was a bit bitter and overpowered by its burned coffee beans. After like a third or fourth sip it tasted watery.

Fantastic little shop, very friendly staff and great service. Everything I have tried has been enjoyable and well made. The "works" oatmeal and a mug of your favorite is perfect for warming up on a cold Anchorage morning.

Nice enough place (3rd visit in a week and always a stop when I'm up here weekly). Being the only game in town downtown at an early hour, it was packed. Call in orders keep them pretty busy, so even with a toasted bagel order & a coffee, the staff was advertising a 20 minute wait. Nice folks, but definitely overwhelmed by the limits of the kitchen.

What a neat place... I breezed in - in a hurry and had to slow down because they had tea that required thought. I settled on the cucumber mojito - a green tea... It was brewed strong (from loose tea) enough to add hot water to and last me til lunch. I also had the spinach feta quiche. Yummy!

A guilty fix I'm always ready to please. Small little local coffee shop full of personality and kindness. Will soon become a regular no doubt.

Great little coffee shop in the heart of downtown. I chose tea after a plane ride accompanied by too much coffee. Chocolate mint tea was my choice, served with steam milk; yum! The WIFI doesn't even require a password (Yay; cause i have the bad luck of always needing assistance to get the password right) and there are computers available too . The music from the radio is awesome. ( probably Sirrus ) The barista is friendly and appears very capable and confident. This is the perfect place to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Awesome coffe shop. Has all kinds of yummy candies you can buy.. I'd totally be a regular if it weren't for parking.

Awesome place to get great coffee and snack, then sit outside and take in a wonderful mountain view with free wifi. Ok, I guess that only works when the weather is good.

This is my downtown go-to cafe. Their sitting area is nice and cozy, they have free wifi and have a couple of computers and a printer to use for a small charge. If it gets crowded, guests can share the large round table in the middle. The front area is a little crowded, but it works. The place will definitely be packed during lunch if there's a convention going on across the street so be prepared. They run drink discounts M, W, and F. All their espresso drinks are standardly delish, not too sweet or strong. They also have a tastey juice/tea smoothie that's nice if you're sick of caffeine. There was a corn chowder that didn't smell too great for me, but the 1/2 sandwich with their house sauce was pretty good! They have a really good tea selection and give it to you already fused in hot water instead of with a tea bag. The staff is always nice and friendly!

Chai was mediocre - too sweet and not much spice. Egg sandwich was good. The biggest draw back was the service speed. I walked in to find three groups, 1-2 people each, ahead of me. 37 minutes later I finally had my drink and breakfast in hand. Several groups behind me gave up and left. Overall, not worth the wait - don't go if you don't have time to spare.

Watched as the barista kept reusing the same frothing pitcher over and over without cleaning it. So customers gets previously heated milk mixed in with their drink. The latte I ordered wasn't worth a second sip. Gross for 2 reasons: 1) Milk when heated properly becomes sweeter; then when overheated becomes thin and watery and burnt tasting. Which is how your drink will end up. 2) Food safety standards dictate you have to keep dairy refrigerated. In this case you're getting old milk throughout the day (frothing the milk doesn't pasteurize it either).

  • Rachel W.

Amazing tasting coffee! I went in asking for a specific type of espresso drink and they knew exactly how to make it. Best I have had. I also ordered the oatmeal which was equally as tasty. It came with milk and fruit with other toppings - great deal for a hearty breakfast!

I lOVE this cozy little shop. As a regular customer I've been coming here for almost three years. It's true the wait can be almost 15 minutes sometimes because of conventions or whatever events are going on in town, but as a regular you learn to plan your coffee break wisely. Don't order your coffee if you only have two minutes to spare, seriously if you've waited in line to order, you will have to wait in line to get your order- It's a pretty simple equation. The staff are cheerful, and the food is so delicious. The thing I appreciate the most about Dark Horse is the quality and caring they put in each cup of coffee. In response to *Ray M*, The old lady behind the counter kicks ass by the way. If I wanted a crappy Mocha in 5 minutes or less made by a barista who didn't know what she was doing, I would have gone to a drive through coffee shack. I appreciate how hard those ladies behind the counter work, and can still manage to smile and be obliging to difficult customers. Keep being the best kept secret in town Dark Horse- You guys and your shop ROCKS!!!

I'm glad I found Dark Horse. (Yelp sure doesn't help. Try searching for it by name above...) A wonderful coffee shop feel with good, locally roasted (IIRC) coffee. They were just far enough from my conference to provide a nice after-lunch escape Friendly baristas with great memories, good coffee, great feel, outdoor seating for the great weather, quick network, good location... And there's a doggie tie-up on the front patio! Yeah, doggies! No one used it while I was there, alas.

The very best coffee shop in Anchorage. It feels like I'm back in my grandmother's kitchen:) LOVE their chai tea latte with almond milk!

Didn't like the coffee (yes, I'm picky when it comes to espresso), but they have the perfect spinach and feta quiche!! Easily the best one I've ever had

Friendly service and a perfect latte! :) right in downtown anchorage. Free wi fi if you buy a coffee and there is a cute cafe area to sit down with some friends.

You know the theme song to Cheers, "Wouldn't you like to get away /Sometimes you want to go /where everybody knows your name, /and they're always glad you came"? That is precisely the feeling you get at Dark Horse Coffee. All the hubbub from the masses of cubicle workers make it obvious that they need to get away, because they all make their escape to Dark Horse. Why do they choose to come here? It's because the baristas are friendly and efficient, and the owner, Karin, literally knows everyone's name. This is, indeed, one of the only places in Anchorage that knows how to make a true macchiato, not the Starbuck's invention, but a true, delicious double shot of espresso with a dash of heavenly foam. You can ask for any drink, any way you want it and they will make it to exacting specifications. The espresso they use is a smooth blend from an Alaskan roaster called Heritage Coffee. Their regular brew is quite delectable as well! There is free wi-fi, delicious pastries and breakfast options, and a cozy place to sit and relax. If you come to Dark Horse, I can guarantee that, like the song from Cheers, the baristas will be glad you came and YOU will be too!

I'm visiting from New York and Dark Horse made me feel like I was at home. Great chai, lots of space, good spot to read the paper or surf the net. So happy I found DH!

Why did nobody tell me about this place! I stopped in one morning before work since I really needed a pick me up and I could not believe my luck. The place is small and if you are ordering anything more than coffee it will take a bit (coffee is in a canister before the line starts so you can fill up your own), but The people were so friendly and I felt like the delicious chai that I ordered got all the attention that I would expect from a friend not your average barista. YUM-MY! I will most definitely be back.

This is one of the few places in town that a) doesn't use Kaladi's horribly roasted and frozen coffee, b) doesn't burn their coffee and c) doesn't use crappy Torani or Da Vinci brand syrups for all of their flavors. They use Heritage Coffee, which in my humble opinion, is smoother and far more palatable than other roasters in state. I LOVE how their caramel and chocolate flavorings are ACTUAL, thick and viscous sauces -- not sugary sweet bottled syrups or that horrible Ghiradelli powder that every other place slings like it's coffee gold. AND they have a ton of different options for really good frappes (more than just ice and espresso shots like other places), plus like, five or six different chais that aren't watered down liquid concentrates but a sort of creamy powder that they steam. Their Americanos have more shots-per-size than other places I've been to, and their prices are really quite reasonable. Under $3 for a 4-shot Americano? Yes, please! Yeah, it gets hella busy in the morning, but what do you expect when you listen to the line, and every other person has a completely different drink to make? Don't go over early when the masses make their exodus from the cubicle farms across the street, and you'll be fine. They also have frequent-buyer stamp cards or pre-paid cards where you can get a little extra for what you pay for.

Great tasting coffee, quaint little coffee shop, good eats, and great downtown location make this one of my favorite places to frequent when I'm in the area. 12oz americano, $1.75. Just down the street from Subzero. Come on in, the coffee's fine.

  • Kaaba K.

A solid non-chain, locally owned place with a good Anchorage feel. Staff was awesome, coffee was better than average (and I'm a bit of a coffee elitist), wi-fi worked well and the atmosphere was extremely friendly.

  • Jack S.

Good for coffee if you are downtown. They have a relaxing seating area to hang out if you want. This place is kind of hidden by the walkway.

I won a $25 gift card to this downtown coffee house at an auction and enjoyed a few Americanos there over a week or two. The coffee was your average, decent Americano, not noticeably different than a Starbucks, and perhaps slightly less delicious. This might be made up for by the independence of the place, and the friendly staff. I believe it is family owned. I've also had a daily soup there which was nothing special. During another occasion I bought a pound of coffee with the remaining money on my gift card. So far, it has been tastier than the coffee the pull themselves.... so perhaps that says something? If you are to go, go for a very relaxed setting / good for kids / working / reading.

Best staff! Everyone is so friendly and they have great coffee.

The Marriott recommended this place. Very good coffee served in large coffee cups. Their scones were also very good (even better when heated). My only complaint was they were a bit slow, but when you're on vacation that's not a biggie.

    (4)
  • Nichole T.

Probably one of the slowest and worst coffee shops I have ever been to. Baristas were very rude and it took forever to get my coffee! I will never be back and I do not recommend this place to anyone that's looking for good coffee. They are in the customer service buisness and should act like it!

    (1)
  • Everett R.

I've been coming here for many moons now. The coffee is consistently good. The only gripe I have is that they are so slow in making the coffee. The staff is friendly and even cheery most mornings, I like coming here for the free wi-fi and the atmosphere. You can usually find on street parking close by. Stop in, have a brew!

    (4)
  • Yo U.

A friendly little spot, Dark Horse Coffee offers decent brews. The young women who staff the place seem to be uniformly peppy and nice. Good job there, boss! The pastries need a bit of work, but it may be difficult to come by a good patisserie here in Anchorage (I presume that these are outsourced). I'll have to try a few more before I render a final verdict in respect of the pastries on offer here.

  • Samantha C.

This is a great coffee shop tucked in behind humpy's and in front of the new center downtown. It's a renovated house that is small but cozy. They offer computers and wireless, the wireless being free with purchase. Their breakfast sandwich is satisfying and also love their quiche. The syrup list is extensive including (yeah for me) quite a variety of suger free options (including mocha). This is surely one of the top coffee places in the area and worth the visit.
