Always stop here when we are in Detroit. Friendly fast service. A must eat in Detroit. Great food good prices.

My coworkers and I were planning on going to the deli next door, but the line was out the door and it was 30 degrees out so Zeff's it was! Zeff's was pretty busy too, but they had one table for us. Yay! It's a greasy spoon kinda diner, and I like those. The decor was an interesting mix of retro and modern. I ordered a ham & cheese omelette with hash browns and rye toast and it was all good. Service pretty speedy, they kept my pepsi refilled, and the prices were pretty good. I'd definitely eat here again.

If you're looking for messy Detroit-style coneys that can compete with anywhere, then you're in luck. Zeff's had been my favorite in Detroit for that for 5 years running, and I've looked really hard for a contender. Today, I tried the Greek coney, as well as two of the regulars. It was a delightful twist on the old favorite. Feta cheese and olives on a coney? Yes, please. It's true that I'm a Flint local, but I still have love for the Detroit coney. I believe both are wonderful and that we, and our coney preferences, can all get along.

Was going to go to Vivio's in the Eastern Market, but the parking lot across the street is all under construction/destruction! Don't know if they are building something, but the lot previously was not in bad condition, so I am thinking that they are building something! Ugh. Since there was so much construction had to find a parking spot somewhere, so found one right outside of Zeff's Coney Island. I asked my friend it this was alright and she said yes. So, we walked into Zeffs and it was just like every other coney island - had a bar where you can sit at or booths and a few tables. Appeared to be clean enough. Ordered a BLT on Rye with fries and iced tea. It was good, nothing outstanding, but good. Waitress was nice enough. There was one television there where the World Cup was playing and U.S. had 0 and Germany had 0 - so, it was a tied game at that point! Hopefully, we can win!!!! Before we left, we paid at the counter and the cooks seemed to be always busy! I would not hesitate to go back, but yet I would not go out of my way!

Great for breakfast & lunch and very quick service - which is especially convenient if you work in Campus Martius. I would recommend Zeff's special for breakfast you get ham, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns or grits, and 3 eggs made your way all for $5.50 - definitely the best breakfast special I have found in the area. Portions are huge here! You'll never leave hungry.

I went to Zeff's on a weekday mid-morning and was pleasantly surprised to find it almost fully packed. I ordered a large Greek salad and planned to share with my mom and they made sure to actually split the salad onto two plates as opposed to simply giving us an extra bowl. It's the little things that make a difference, you know? Their dressing was amazing and the salad was nice and fresh. I ordered a club sandwich and fries which were also freshly prepared and well-portioned. My mom tried one of their daily special soups which my mom and daughter slurped down.... and if my mom finishes anything she orders it's almost a miracle so I confidently recommend their soups to those of you who have a panache for soups. Zeff's is only made that much greater because of it's location at Eastern Market!

The perks of having someone in your life that loves spontaneous adventures in downtown Detroit is that you end up at random restaurants at random times during the day. Case in point: Zeff's on a muggy Memorial Day morning. Zeff's wasn't our first choice of the day but because so many places were closed downtown due to the holiday (totally acceptable!), my boyfriend and I dined here for breakfast. The place was packed even though nothing was happening in Eastern Market (I can only imagine how chaotic it is on a busy Saturday!) but the waitress was prompt and you could tell she was trained well in her job! Nothing I love more than fast service! Breakfast was great and cheap! You can't screw up pancakes and bacon but this really hit the spot. Eggs were great as well! Can't wait to try something else next time I'm in the neighborhood. You can tell this is a place that the crowd frequents often. Everyone treats you like you're at home.

Zef's is my go-to diner in Detroit. I love Eastern Market, as anyone should know, so of course I will find places around there to hang disproportionately. But I have no idea why the overpriced "deli" next to it gets such mad traffic when Zef's is completely better. Like most of the Coneys here - diners, for those not in MI - there seems to be an Albanian connection. That's relevant because you can get french toast and grits, as well as a gyro and hummus. Also, the one older, I assume head server is taciturn in the way of put-upon cultures. The food is fast. Decent price, though not as cheap as some - I would guess owing to its location. Big portions. Open kitchen, which provides a sort of entertainment on its own. The kind of place where there are clear regulars who have clear favorite young servers. Seems maybe like a family gig, based on the tone and banter among staff. Cleanliness is fair - nothing off-putting, though nothing surprisingly nice, either. Solid.

Friendly " in an eastern block friendly way". Lol fast no nonsense get your feed on place. Busy! We were there at 8 and they were nearly full. Breakfast is solid. I had a spinach mushroom Swiss cheese omelet and it was puuuuuuurrrrfect! Hubs raved about the sausage patties- he thought fresh made there from EM but they get it from hamtrammack

Very quick, attentive, and friendly service. I has the breakfast special #1 which is your basic two eggs, hash browns, bacon, and toast. The portion size is good and the rye toast is particularly tasty. The weakest link would have to be the hash browns as they have an oily flavour and they are not consistently cooked. But they are still edible. And really the price is right.

Never seen a smaller piece of meat on a plate in my life. Was covered with sauce and a bun..but the actual piece of meat was about half the size of a regular small hot dog. Disgusting. And very strange that your check doesn't have a price on it. Wondering why that's the case......

Guess we picked the wrong time of day. We didn't realize they closed at 3 when we walked in at 2:40. Asked for a straw for my drink 3 times, the waitress said ok. Never got one, apparently they don't have them. Asked for mayonnaise twice. The bill wasn't itemized, but I think we had to PAY for the sides of mayo. The food wasn't bad, but they hovered over us, waiting for us to leave.

They have some really delicious Eggs Benedict! Not something that you see all of the time, at any restaurant, but it's hit or miss when places have it! This place is great... Good location, pretty central to Wayne State! We'll be back!

Great place if you need a quick bite to eat. Friendly staff, i really liked how the chef brought our food to our table himself and later asked how it was. Cute! There are lots of options for vegetarians (veggie pita, veggie burger or melt, veggie stir fry, spinach & feta wrap....) which was a huge plus for me. I would come back again. Plus, free parking across the street at Eastern Market

Stopped in for a late lunch on a Saturday. Eastern market was heaving and this place was busy. We were seated within minutes and the staff were attentive without being intrusive. The food was delivered exceptionally quickly, and they were great with our two young children. Fine dining this ain't, but the portions are good and the service prompt.

Not the best food and the cooks don't wear gloves! The waitresses are really nice, but the guys can be rude. I only stop here in a pinch, when I'm starving and need to be close to the office. Any other time, I would not eat here. But when I do, I always order something that doesn't require the cooks to touch my food with their bare hands. Gross guys! Oh, and don't question the price of the food because the old guy will yell and you and throw you out.

yum! i love zeff's! this place is so delicious. i've been lucky enough to try a lot of things here - corned beef hash with poached eggs, french toast, coney, burger, chili cheese fries, steak and eggs. everything is great! i love the corned beef hash. potatoes are perfectly crispy in the right spots. the corned beef is delicious slices mixed right in. i get it without onions and green peppers so i can't speak for how those are. the first time i got it and got my eggs poached, they were cooked all the way through, like a hard boiled egg. that was disappointing but since then i've asked for it runny, which i hope is not obnoxious, and it's been perfect since. only thing is i wish they had something other than frank's for hot sauce. why isn't tabasco a normal thing for restaurants anymore? the coney is great too, pretty typical, but with super good chili. the french toast is big fluffu slices, egged just right. i can't imagine not getting it. service is really great! you can tell they have a lot of regulars. i've only been here in the middle of the afternoon where it's pretty slow but service is always friendly and attentive. they are totally on it for soda and coffee refills. it's mostly quiet and the booths are cozy. entrees are on the very slightly pricier side for a divey diner but i guess they have kind of a prime spot by eastern market and especially next to russell street. also the portions are really really big, so i've always had leftovers. totally worth it. i love this place and writing this review is giving me a serious craving for it.

I ran into Zeff's one weekday morning before lunch. I specified weekday morning because it appears to be a madhouse on the weekend. I guess that speaks to the quality of the place -- people seem to love it! Anyway, I just wanted a quick bite to eat and didn't have to wait long at all. I ordered bacon and hash browns. I couldn't help notice, while waiting, that there was a tray of bacon just sitting on a lower shelf under the grill. Pre-cooked bacon just sitting waiting to be re-heated on the grill... on a bottom shelf? I cringed at that. The people were friendly, the service was fairly quick.

Kind of looks like a hole in the wall. I think its a causal local joint. A lot of workers can be seen here enjoying their lunch. Your typical diner. Nothing fancy. Cheap and tasty. You pay at the counter. Everyone is pretty friendly.

The entire staff was smiling the entire time I was there. They truly wanted to know how I have been and what I have been up to. I got the veggie omelet and by far the best omelet I have had in some time. I wish I went with a bigger appetite cause the food portions were HUGE!

A restaurant with food this good is a rare treat in Michigan. Zeff's never fails to live up to the highest standard in food quality. The cooks there are the best. I agree totally with all the good reviews here. My favorites: Corned Beef and Swiss omelet. Any Corned Beef sandwich (the best in town!). Cheeseburgers. The soups are homemade and delicious. Ham and cheese omelet. Breakfasts are especially awesome and they use the Detroit Brand sausages, which are so good you'll never want any other. The burgers are made exactly like a good hamburger should be made. I hate to recommend this place because I don't want to see a line out the door for a seat. Forget Saturday breakfast, it's too crowded. Sunday morning is a good time to get in and any weekday. Oh, and the prices are very reasonable. Well worth the trip.

We were here for breakfast before rainy flower day today. First time visit because we've never been here early enough before today to not wait in line (we're not very patient - especially when hungry - so we hardly ever wait in line to eat). They serve basted eggs, which is great since I just joined weight watchers, so fried eggs were out. Hubby got a 3 egg omelet and said it was fantastic (flat kind, not fluffy kind - personally, I prefer fluffy). The waitress was friendly, and the atmosphere is classic Coney.

This is the right place to be if you like to spent your Saturday at eastern market. We tried to eat there every saturday before we went to eastern market to buy groceries. The staff is very friendly and the food is awesome. We didn`t expect it when we came in but we really enjoyed every of our stays. We tried to eat the menu up and down and thought it was all pretty good. The bad thing is your stomachic can never be big enough :-)

Cheap and greasy diner food, the place has it's own charm. Saturday morning breakfast time is always crowded, thanks to the Eastern Market crowd. But it runs like a well oiled machine, with fast and friendly services, every step seems to be nicely timed they will get you in and out quickly enough. Based on what we'd sample (corned beef hash, omelet), happy to report that food is fresh, typical diner food taste, and large quantity! It's a good alternative breakfast place to next-door Russel Street Deli, which usually has a line out the door on weekends.

Food is decent. Nothing to write home (or Yelp) about. The reason I won't ever eat here again is the uncomfortable seating. There is hardly any space at all between the tables, and the booths are very tight. I had to eat my entire meal with the table jammed up against my chest and constantly scooting my chair in tighter to accommodate the waitress who could hardly squeeze between everybody.

"Can You Say Feta?" True blue coney island in the heart of Detroit's Eastern Market. Awesome breakfasts, greek salads and authentic coney island hot dogs. The cheese is fresh from the market, creamy and tangy.

Five stars for food. I love chicken finger pitas. Every coney I go to I get a chicken finger pita. I don't know what it is about fried chicken, fake cheese and lettuce and tomato doused in ranch dressing, but I love it. So you can imagine, throughout my years, that I have had quite a few from quite a few places, and this place has the best. I know you're thinking that's a pretty bold statement, but I stand by it. I do give half a knock for decor; the place could definitely use a little sprucing up, and a half knock for the attire of their wait staff. Something about seeing ones muffin top hang outside their spaghetti strap belly shirt with torn jeans is not appetizing.

Zeffs is awesome! Laurie is a great waitress, she takes care of us for lunch . We work closeby and get lunch there often for 10 to 15 people. The orders are always right and everybody raves about the menu. You will not go wrong stopping by this place. I recommend everything on the menu but my favorite is Zeffs Grill.

Nice little neighborhood eatery. I ate there mid-week for a late lunch and had the corned beef sandwich - loved it. The interior is total neighborhood dive, but food and service make it worth going to. The portions are large, the prices reasonable, and the service very attentive. When you're around, check it out!

This is the BEST Coney Island in Michigan. We usually go there on Sundays and absolutely love this place. First, keep in mind this is a Coney Island, so the environment is not all sophisticated and the food is clear and simple. Also it is small and crowded inside. The crowd is quite interesting, people from downtown, students, detroit and people like us from the suburbs... Old, young, children (even babies) everyone just come together in this awesome eatery. The food is done to perfection. The portions are generous, and we can't get enough of the Corned Beef Hash. Crispy potatoes, with a hint of green peppers and onions, and of course the star ingredient the corned beef perfectly shredded and mixed. Think about hash browns that are a bit crunchy and brown on the outside, and that is exactly what you are getting here. We also love the hamburguers, I think the secret is the hot grill, the meat is perfectly seared and moist. The buns are fresh and fluffy and go perfectly with the fresh tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, onions and just a hint of mayo. Simple but delicious. French Fries are always good, they are fried to order, always beautifully golden, crunchy and dry on the outside and smooth and hot in the inside ... yummo! Omelets are great too, and of course, what is a Coney without coffee? This coffee warms your soul. Service is friendly and fast and the price is the best of all! All this food and friendly service usually runs for $30 for my family of 5!!!! Cheaper to eat here than to cook breakfast at home... and it tastes just like homemade, a true gem in town among a few in existance in Michigan.

I consider Zeff's my personal coney island. I'm there at least twice a week and I'm expected. I don't eat beef, so finding a great breakfast where I can get turkey meat products is important to me. The food is great and the staff is friendly. It's a great place to people watch and laugh at the chumps lined up outside of the Russell Street Deli. Do not be fooled by the "other Zef's", the one "f" place. Zeff's is the one and only.

  • Tom C.

I love coney islands and I've tried dozens around Michigan. I can honestly say that this was the best loose coney I've ever had. It was piled with loose meat. The chili was just the right spice. The bun was perfect. I will definitely stop here on my trips to Eastern Market.

Love this place-- it's easily the best Coney Island in Detroit. The food is delicious, the coffee is fresh, the service is friendly, and the prices are cheap. Highly recommend the gyro omelet (pictured above), farmer's omelet, corned beef hash, and the gyro pita.

a Detroit fixture. The sister restaurant to Zef's in Pontiac, Nick and my old Saturday morning haunt. Cheap, greasy, and a perfect post-hangover meal. I'll never forget the meal i had here, the morning she told me the story of the novel.
