I have to say that I was a little disappointed. The food was good, but not worth the prices that they charge. At least not by Louisville price standards. The least expensive meal on the menu the night that we were there was the "Pork Belly Burger", which was priced at $15. Now let's be honest... Pork Belly is just another term for a thick piece of bacon. Therefore, it was a Bacon Cheeseburger! The only problem was that the "Pork Belly" was about 1 inch by 3 inch, and nothing but fat. In other cities a bacon cheeseburger may cost $15, but in Louisville, it's a $8-$9 meal. I was in a party of 7 people. Of the 7 of us, two had a problem with their steaks being drowned in the sauce, and one person had to send their short ribs back and get something else because there was no meat on the bones, just fat. Since we had 7 people, the restaurant automatically added 20% gratuity. Don't get me wrong, I am generous when it comes to giving tips. And, I understand that most places have similar policies, but it has always been a pet peeve of mine because it is an invitation for the wait staff to provide bad service. And in this case, that is what happened. Our waiter's could care less if we were happy with our meals, if our water glasses were full, etc... It was very clear that his only goal was to drive up the bill as much as possible. He only recommended the most expensive things on the menu. It was so blatantly obvious that it was comical. When I told him that I wanted the cheeseburger, his response was, "Really, are you sure about that?" I asked if that was a problem, and if it was any good. He responded by telling me that the burger was excellent, and they sell a lot of them. THEN WHY THE HELL ARE YOU ASKING ME IF I AM SURE! The decore and atmosphere in the restaurant is excellent, and it is a good place to go with a group of 4-6 people. But it was a little on the loud side.

This place is terrible. Slow service, while empty on a Saturday night. We won't be back!!

What a great spot for dinner before a show. Went here before going to see Wicked, and had a fantastic meal! Absolutely LOVED the fritters appetizer. Absolutely beautiful inside. Will return for sure.

Terrible service and I ordered a flat bread that looked and tasted like a microwave pizza. I will not be coming back.

our first visit here was horrid. i ordered a red snapper special and upon tasting it came to the conclusion that it was bad. not bad as in "i don't like this", bad as in it was spoiled and probably would have made me or anyone else very sick had they gotten past the horrendous smell and eaten it. in all fairness, the management was very responsive to my complaint and took good care of us. that was the only reason we went back last night. I had the filet. it was tough and devoid of flavor and for 32 dollars was a giant dissapointment. my wife had the shrimp and grits. the shrimp were over-cooked and tough yet still had a fishy smell and taste to them. not very good. as I am typing this my wife is throwing up from what i believe to be food poisoning from the shrimp she had at marketplace. I would normally never accuse a place of this because it's kinda hard to prove. but with my history here, i'm quite convinced. service was good. dining room is fantastic. food is bad and severely over-priced comparative to quality. far too many great restaurants in this town to waste your time here. we should have went to jack fry's.

I'm being kind giving 3 stars. The food was OK and the service was actually very good, but there was just something about the place....it's like they are trying to be too hip. Plus the place is very dark. Might be nice if you are on a date but I was here with family. The main reason that I went 3 stars is that the food is priced too high for the value. Maybe I don't get downtown much, but see my review of Doc Crow's for good value downtown.

Theater Square on 4th Street in Louisville is becoming a place to visit and eat and shop. Just this week, in the old Kentucky Theater Building, I discovered Theater Square Wine & Spirits, Nancy's Bagel Box, and Bikram Yoga. And opening in July are Wine Bar with a 12 bottle wine tap system, Gourmet Grocery, and Bon Appetit Cafe/Restaurant. And, for fine dining, The Brown Hotel is on the corner :)

I've been here for lunch a few times and once for dessert. The service has been slow with no obvious reason -- the restaurant was not crowded -- and the price has been too high for the quality of food. When we went for dessert, the options were limited and not impressive. We ordered cocktails instead but after waiting an unnecessarily long time with no drink and no follow-up, we left. The outside space was nice. The market part of the restaurant also tends to close at times when the hours state it should be open.

Very convenient location for theatres downtown. But worth the trip for no reason but the space &food. The space is an experience in itself. Could be in NYC or sf. Lighting, outdoor space, bars so sophisticated, but friendly Kentucky hospitality at every level. And the food! Truffle fries as a starter with a Manhatten type cocktail. Fried oysters &grits, delicious fresh greens. Mmmm. Not cheap, but worth it. I want to go back for lunch. Today.

So far this is my favorite place in Louisville to eat. The food is supurb, the design is avant-garde, and the staff is friendly as if you've known them for years. Highly recommended for happy hour or a first date.

I don't always spend $15 on a salad, but when I do, my expectations are through the roof. Wow, Marketplace's salmon and spinach salad exceeded those expectations. I had such high hopes for it that I actually expected to be disappointed. I was not. This review is based solely on the salad, as it's the only thing I've had from here. The restaurant itself is stunningly beautiful, but I picked up a carryout order today. The salmon and spinach salad is out-of-this-world good. It contains all things good: bacon, feta cheese, caramelized onions, mushrooms, and bourbon dressing. Topped with some of the most delicious salmon I've ever tasted. Seriously, this salmon was cooked to perfection. Crisp on the outside, but moist and tender on the inside. The salmon was fresh and flavorful, not fishy at all. The salmon was really the star, but all of the toppings were excellent. All of the ingredients paired together wonderfully. The salad itself was on the small side, though the portion of salmon was hearty. And that's all that really matters, right? The only thing I wished was that it wouldn't end. I tried to savor every bite. The salmon and spinach salad is a definite five stars.

My husband and I were in Louisville over the weekend, staying at The Brown. We strolled over here for a late lunch on the 4th. It was not very busy, probably because of the hour and the holiday. We were given the choice to sit inside or out, and opted for the patio because it was a gorgeous day. What a beautiful outdoor space! The cushioned chairs were very comfortable and the plants and statues made for a lovely atmosphere. The service was great. Our waiter was friendly, informative, and we struck up a couple conversations with him on the area and things to do. My husband enjoyed some of the craft beer and I had a cocktail that was very refreshing and delightful. It had cucumber vodka, pinot grigio, lemon, mint, and a splash of lemon-lime soda, which I asked to sub with soda water. Delicious! We both enjoyed our meals. My husband had the hot fried chicken entree, because he wanted the polenta that came with it, and he was not disappointed at all. We guessed that the sauce was honey + sambal oelek - it was very good. I had the infamous chicken salad that I asked for without the roll (I am gluten free) and the waiter suggested that it be served on tomatoes. Perfect. It came on a bed of lettuce with two thick tomato rounds. It was seasoned well and the golden raisins and spiced pecans were perfect. The only thing missing were the house made sweet potato chips that are supposed to accompany a sandwich, according to the menu. I thought that maybe they did not include them on my plate because I was not going to be charged for a sandwich - but when the bill came, I was. . .so I kind of missed the chips. Probably just a miscommunication, and frankly, I should have spoken up. When we return to Louisville, we will return to the Marketplace and the gorgeous patio - and I'll be sure to get the sweet potato chips.

Me and my work wives used to come here for happy hour, but we haven't been in a while. Some things never change! The truffle fries are still super delicious and easy to share because of the large portion that they give you. They also have other menu items that I would recommend trying. The warm goat cheese served with crostini is amazing, their local salad is a good pick if you are in the mood for a salad but don't want an overload of toppings, and the roasted brussel sprouts are an A+! I was recently here for a pre-concert snack and a drink. Their draft beer list is small but quality. They have a nice wine list, and a full bar of liquor. The decor and ambiance of this spot is really what makes it worth stopping in for a nice quiet meal or drinks. They have gorgeous glass sculptures hanging and lots of other interesting items/furniture pieces that make for lovely eye candy. The outdoor patio is massive and beautifully lit/laid out. They have a bar in the middle and your choice of front or back patios. Such a fantastic place on Theatre Square. Go here.

Descent food and drinks. The patio is awesome! My cucumber cocktail was a little sweet for my liking but the waitress brought me lemon so that helped. The salmon salad was good but I could have used more spinach and no bacon. Still descent. My friend loved his steak sandwich.

I love their goat cheese so much. It now has a tomato chutney in it which sweetens it up more than before. They have lots of craft draft beers. The last time I went, I got a free extra draft because they accidentally poured an extra one. Ok! The service is always friendly and they have a large selection of appetizers and entrees.

Lunched here on a Saturday with rain threatening so chose to sit indoors. There is a lovey patio for outside seating. The indoor dining is also very nice with a good atmosphere for a date nite. Food: we chose the spinach salmon salad and shrimp and grits. Both were excellent! Salmon was perfectly cooked with a crispy outside and perfectly cooked inside (not overdone!). Salad wasn't overdressed and was delicious. Shrimp and grits were delicious and shrimp were also well-cooked. For dessert, we shared a derby pie which was more like a derby bar and topped with fruit and whipped cream. This is a shareable portion, it is generous! And delicious! Service: our service was just right. We were checked on often enough without being bothered. Overall impression: delicious food, good service, nice atmosphere. I shall return!

The truffle fries are AMAZING. So are the bacon and spinach risotto fritters. The dinner menu is a little more pricy and I liked the two appetizers we had much more than the meal I ordered.

Marketplace, you are like a tranquil oasis in the middle of downtown. With everyone clamoring for lunch downtown as well as a nice dinner, how is there not a line out the door daily!?!? Want a meal by a piano in an opulent bar? You got it. Want something more formal? Check. Want to soak in rays along with a great meal from cushy red chairs? Come here. Want an outdoor meal by a waterfall? You've come to the right place. Marketplace seems so large that they will have a spot that fits your needs. And, most importantly, the food is great. During my most recent visit, my best friend and I each got salads, which hit the spot while we sat outside by the waterfall. She got the chef's salad, while I got the Greek salad, though we tried each. I loved the use of artichokes in the chef's salad. And soft cheese and olives can't be beat in the Greek salad. And since we had been so health conscious, we rewarded ourselves ... with the truffle Parmesan fries ... the $12 giant bowl of them. And, of man, they were worth the calories. The bowl is huge, and despite our initial doubt that we would eat them all, we licked that bowl clean. The truffle oil gives them some complexity while Parmesan is pretty much great on anything. I also had their cider Manhattan, which tasted great and smooth. The service was exceptional and fast. The prices weren't out of whack with what you receive. All in all, Marketplace gave me and my friend a wonderful meal. I just hope enough other people frequent this beautiful spot so that it sticks around for awhile to come.

Classy and hidden away with a cozy feel- I felt right at home at Marketplace. Located just behind the Brown Hotel and next to The Palace, this casual fine-dining establishment provides an elegant but laid-back atmosphere to wine and dine until your heart's content. Our group of 4 went for dinner after The Oaks last Friday and I didn't expect to get the attentive service we received. Our service was outstanding! We arrived about 30 minutes before our reservation but still were greeted with a smile and seated right away. I had the shrimp and grits and WOW was it good! The grits were creamy and packed with flavor and the shrimp were huge. The largest shrimp I have ever seen. My husband had the short ribs and I stole a few bites. Tender, juicy and perfectly seasoned. I also tried my friends' salmon and it was quite tasty too. I must say my favorite part was the chocolate mousse. It was SINFUL!

Small portions. If you come hungry, you might leave hungry. Salad, $9 on a rectangular plate. That looked like it was made to serve sushi. Our main course came in a big bowl. They looked and tasted good. But we were still hungry. For the price and location, I would expect the staff to look more professional. Our hostess wore black spandex "outfit" (that wasn't flattering on her) and white flip flops. A female waitress wore a black top that zipped up in the back. Another waitress wore something different. Maybe I'm being picky, but I feel if I'm dropping $60 for dinner for two (one salad, two main courses, sweet tea), I shouldn't get an Applebee's style look from the staff. Between the portions and staff appearance, I will not come back.
Thumbs up on the food here. I had the truffle fries appetizer and they were delicious. For dinner I had the ricotta gnocchi which was equally as good. It's served with a tomato cream sauce and mushrooms. Overall food quality is great- they use fresh ingredients for everything. My only complaint here is the prices are a bit high for what you get, and the main entrees don't come with any sides. The restaurant itself it great, lots of outside dining space. If you have an event at the Mercury ballroom it's a perfect place to eat beforehand.

Worst experience of my life, food was horrible, rudest staff I've ever met. Spend your money on a local restaurant that will appreciate your dollars. The lady manager was the saddest lady I've ever met.

Don't under estimate this place from the unassuming entrance. The truffle fries are great ... and big hearty portions so definitely get an order to share with the table. Skip the pork belly. I had the sea bass and it was cooked perfectly. I normally stay at the Brown Hotel when in town and this place is a stone's throw away.

My partner and I wanted to try a new restaurant last night and decided to go to the Marketplace Restaurant. We had been there last summer for a hosted event and thought we would go back for a Friday night dinner out. The menu is rather pricey and somewhat limited. Our waiter was a little snooty and said maybe ten words to us the whole time we were there. He didn't introduce himself, offer any type of greeting what so ever or take any time to offer any suggestions or even ask if we had any questions about the menu. He was more interested in another table of 4 and so we waited a while for our drinks and food.At the end of the meal he even brought us the wrong bill. Fortunately for him we are honest people and brought it to his attention because it certainly would have been in our favor. The food was actually good. My partner had the Filet and he said it was good and prepared as he requested. I had the local salad to start - it was tasty but it looked a little wilted and could have been a little cooler. My entree was the ricotta gnocchi - it was good but I could have eaten another bowl of it - small portion. There was no bread served which is a big pet peeve of mine. We each had desert - cheesecake and mousse - both were OK. We also had coffee but unfortunately we were not offered refills. So, for the amount that we paid for the meal I would say that it was not worth it. With the service as it was it was a little disappointing. Being new to Louisville we are trying to experience the great dining options that are here. The Marketplace will not be one we return to. One nice thing however was the jazz combo playing - they sounded good!
The salmon croquettes and fried chicken were great as was the cocktail we tried. Can't wait to go back to try some more and some desserts!

Taking this place from a 4 star (generous) to a 2. We stopped in around 8 Saturday night before a concert at Mercury Ballroom. This was the idea for many as the typical age group attending that night's concert was over 30. First off there were 3 hosts standing around talking and the restaurant was less than half full so really... no reason to have all of them standing there unless maybe 1 of them wasn't a host and just taking up space, the same 3 were still there when we left. None of them offered to take my coat either. The bartender was slow to greet us, slow to make our drinks. First I asked if they had cucumber vodka and the answer was a short "no" without even a hint of a counter offer that might interest me. After I ordered "2 Vodka Sodas w/2 Lemons" he started and then asked what I ordered. The pour was SOOOOOOOOOOO WEAK! I mean, I can count and a traditional high ball is at least 1.25 oz if not 2.00 in some heavier handed places. This was barely 0.75 oz and for $6 that is UNACCEPTABLE. He forgot the 2nd lemon and didn't even squeeze them!?!??! The glass was so full of soda I could not even pick it up to drink it for fear of spilling it. Did I mention how slow he was moving around the bar overall?!? It was hard to watch. I had to ask for a food menu which I really just wanted to glance at. I was not told about any specials or asked if I wanted a second beverage when ours was finished. MONEY LOST I usually don't rant over small things but then when I visited with friends who had just dined there that evening they said the portions were TINY, especially for the PRICE, the service was unimpressive and the auto gratuity at 20% was offensive. They also let me know while waiting for their table earlier that evening they stood at the bar for 15 minutes with a friend who was already their with a drink and were not greeted OR offered a drink while they were waiting. MORE MONEY LOST because they were thirsty. When the cost of your drinks and meal are high I expect more from staff. Your bartenders should be your most experienced hospitality employees next to your managers. It was also unappealing when the live entertainment took a 20 minute break there was ZERO music playing in the entire place so it sounded like they were about to close. In summary... 1) Poor, Slow, Unfriendly Service 2) Expensive and Small Portions and Weak Drinks 3) Zero Ambiance These guys kind of have a lock on pre-party for Mercury Ballroom & Louisville Palace, for folks over 30 I hope they step their game up so that I can park once and go two places on the rare nights I get "out on the town"

This is my third trip to Louisville, and second time to Marketplace. My husband and I were blown away by our meals- we haven't been WOWED like this in a long time! I had the short ribs, which I normally shy away from, but they were boneless and garnished with sweet potato. Delicious! My husband chose two appetizers for his meal- the brussel spouts and the lamb risotto balls. Both were completely outstanding, and we'll recommend any if these dishes. Our server was delightful. Very friendly without being intrusive.

The food was delicious, if a bit overpriced ($7 for a side of Brussels sprouts). The service was non-existent. Our server ended up being the bartender also, and he came to our table exactly one time, which we had to wait 10 minutes for in the first place. I had to go to the bar and order drinks and to ask for my check. I know the guy was likely busy, but at least say something to me about it. I don't think I'll go back.

Well, it had been a while since we visited this place and thought we'd give it another shot. First, the service was pleasant but slow. The bar itself took forever just to get BEER! the appetizer (goat cheese) was good but then....the entree. 2 of us ordered the fried chicken and BOTH were raw on the inside. We told the server who was apologetic but no one from the management staff came to speak to us. When bringing the check the server said, "I went ahead and took the chicken off"... To some I guess that would be sufficient but I suppose we expected more since both entrees were not edible. I have this a two star because the atmosphere is very nice. Unfortunately the service and food is not :(
Truffled fries are decadently delicious, mains decent but not spectacular, kale on top of eggplant very refreshing. Service disappointingly on the slow side. Beware of disgruntled diners.

I recently had the best dinner of my life at this restaurant. I loved everything about this place: ambiance, service, food, drinks and people watching. I had the Panzanella salad to start. The tomatoes were flavorful! For dinner , I ordered the Garlic Greens & Polenta. I felt like there was a flavor explosion in my mouth. Amazing! The only reason I am not giving this place 5 stars is because of the bread pudding. It was bland and the texture was not consistent with what comes to mind when you think of bread pudding.

Everything was great except I ordered a tap beer and was delivered without any carbonation. I asked for a replacement and that was not problem. HOWEVER THEY CHARGED FOR THE FLAT BEER. I am not about to quibble the bill with others at the table but they should have removed that charge.

I've been to this spot for lunch, dinner, happy hour and parties countless times. While it's never been known for great, fast service, that doesn't deter me from going there weekly. I go back time and time again because the atmosphere is great and the food is always delicious. With such a variety of spaces within the restaurant, you can always find the perfect setting to match your mood and the occasion. The outdoor areas are so nice. The three bars are great. The indoor and outdoor lounges are perfect for an intimate happy hour or medium-sized celebrations. For lunch and dinner, I really enjoy the back room with a central fountain that encases three fireplaces. Most important, however, is the menu. You can never go wrong with the flatbreads. Two people can easily make a meal out of one order with a small salad each. They also make great apps for a larger party. When given the choice over normal or truffle fries, always go for truffle. I'm not even sure why the offer the normal ones. The black bean burger is great for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. The eggplant appetizer also makes a great vegetarian entree. Always save room for dessert, as they offer a smorgasboard of delightful choices.

Great restaurant, great atmosphere and awesome patio space. Food and drink were great! Would definitely recommend!
Reservations at 7:45 on 2/13/15 for 4. Arrived as planned at 7:15 to have a cocktail. Informed the hostess we would be in the lounge and she responded she would come and get us at 7:45 In the lounge my wife ordered sparkling water with lime in a wine glass. ( diet ) We received regular water in a bottle. When I inquired with the waiter his response: "I guess we're out of sparkling water, sorry!" We weren't seated until 8:20! When the hostess was asked about the delay her response: "We don't have your reservation!" I saw our name for 4 on their computer when we arrived! When the menus were distributed salmon was not available however I had checked the Website to ensure this entree was included. ( diet ) I spoke to the manger, Ricky, explained everything that had happened. His response: I guess the Website wasn't updated!" "We're not offering salmon for Valentine's Day." (it's the 13th) The attitude, response and lack of customer service was pathetic. Albeit the meal when served was quite good. Ricky should be fired as his staff emulates his values. The Jazz Band was exceptional! I will never go here again. " 0 " Stars!

Absolutely zero service. Myself and four other guys had a reservation here and were planning to have a big night. After waiting 15 minutes at the table without being greeted we decided to leave. Worst experience, and the manager wasn't even apologetic.

Had a mini get away with my husband this weekend and had dinner here late Friday night (8/22). The atmosphere was perfect for a late night dinner. We were dressed pretty casually but didn't feel out of place. The jazz music was awesome and the sweet jazz singer was adorable. Our server was Dara and she was great. We were having an unusually hard time deciding what we wanted to eat and settled on the beef shortrib and shiitake flatbread and marketplace salad for starters and then we had the shrimp and grits and a delicious fish special of scallops and garlic noodles with white beans. Everything was great. They had a great selection of beer and wine also. We thought about getting a bottle but decided against it. Great place. We will definitely be back.

I was in downtown Louisville for work and had a night out at my disposal. Walked up 4th Street to the Brown Hotel and passed this lovely little gem on the way. Decided to give it a go. A bit splurgey, but a nice treat. First, the space is really lovely. Indoor and outdoor seating, with a lot going on, and yet it is all very complementary. We were drawn by the look of the place from the sidewalk and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We started with the pulled pork risotto fritters. Delicious! Crispy, tender, sweet, savory, spicy. Bottle of wine on our server's recommendation and our input of what we like was perfect, and he kept our glasses filled all evening. We had the gnocchi, easily the biggest gnocchi I have ever encountered. Cheesy pillows of goodness! The duck breasted was equally good - perfectly cooked - atop purple mashed potatoes. The accompanying greens weren't great. I am not a huge fan, so I'm not faulting the chef for that. Since we were going all-out, dessert was a must. From the plate (chocolate-heavy assortment), we selected the dulce de leche cheesecake. Awesome! A ribbon of caramel through a perfectly balanced cheesecake, with a drizzle of full-flavored and thick caramel sauce underneath. A perfect, rich, not-too-sweet finish to a delicious meal. Solid service. Personable, attentive, but the place was not very full on a weeknight. I actually ran into our server a few days later and he remembered me! Ingredients sourced from local farms. Seasonal menu. Perfect portion size. Knocked them down a star for the price point. There are loads of places in town just as interesting and tasty but less spendy.

Here for lunch on 7/29. Had the chef salad with a balsamic vinegarett. The salad was a nice mix of greens with cherry tomatoes, egg, candied pecans and turkey. The dressing was light and not over powering. It was very good. Wish I could've had a beer with it. They have a nice selection of bourbon as well.

So I have to admit this place is so unexpected it will hit you broadside. The atmosphere is very cool, modern but pays homage to the roots of the area. The food is extremely inventive I had a ricotta stuffed eggplant for my appetizer and it was awesome, the flavours were all right on the head of where they should have been. The Pork for the main dish was very tasty as well. I am shocked that this place is not packed every night of the week. I travel a lot and this place would fit in anywhere that you expect a great dining experience. The entire experience was one I will not soon forget nor will I wait too much longer before I head back to try some of the other yummies on the menu.

I've been a fan of the place since they started building it and I am SO glad that they have stuck around! The food is always delicious, and I really like the idea of a seasonal/changing menu. It keeps things new. There have been a few clunkers, but those are usually phased out by the next time I go back. I love the flatbreads and I can't say enough good things about the goat cheese fondue! So good! We had our company holiday party here 2 years in a row and they have been wonderfully accommodating and good at keeping the food and drink coming. This is one of the places in Louisville that I take all my visitors. And if I am going to a show at the Brown or the Palace theaters, this is always my first suggestion for dinner. Sometimes the service can be a little sluggish, but I like the ambiance so much that I am willing to put up with it. I've had the same waiter many times for lunch and dinner. I ordered a martini once and he made extra...I basically got 2 martinis and only paid for one. That's pretty awesome. The food can be a little price-y. And the one thing I really don't like is that soda (the last time I had it there) came in very small bottles and no refills. But that's my only real complaint.

A friend of mine lives a block away so this is her neighborhood liquor store. It's so beautiful and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Definitely give it a try if you haven't already! The restaurant is also fantastic: the food is delicious, the atmosphere is serene, your mood is almost immediately lifted just by walking in the front doors. This place should be on your list of places to visit if you are in this area.

This place was a great find! We stopped in before a concert at Mercury Ballroom and we were pleasantly surprised. The ambiance is perfect for a date night! Food was excellent with the exception of the underseasoned steak one of my friends received. The warm goat cheese app was incredible and the Italian sausage app (special for the night) was perfectly prepared! Marketplace definately deserves another visit!!!

What a delightful experience. I was waiting for an associate oats to arrive & decided to grab one if the lounge seats outside. The waiter made sure I had extra cushions & checked on me several times. I ended up ordering the roasted Brussels sprouts. They are the best I've had ever. The cherries made the dish. I'll return next time I'm in town. The outdoor space is lovely.

Why haven't I heard of this place sooner? It is beautiful and the food lives up to the upscale decor. Don't miss the brussel sprout appetizer with bourbon hoisin, dried cheeries and almonds. Weird but wonderful! The truffle fries appetizer are not the best I've ever had but good and more than enough for 4. I had the perfectly cooked scallops while 2 in our party had the garlic seared strip steak which they deemed very nice but lacking the garlic flavor they expected. We all agreed that the best entree of the evening was the boneless beef short ribs served over polenta and greens. Our server explained that they are slowed cooked for hours before they make it to the table. They have a well rounded bourbon list and the cider Manhattan lives up to its award winning reputation. I can't comment on the desserts because the appetizer and entree portions were so generous. We can't wait to return to enjoy the patio which is absolutely beautiful with a waterfall wall.

Dined here twice in two years and both times was beyond my expectation. I wish this restaurant existed in my home city because I'd go there all the time. The brussels sprouts and truffle fries are delicious, as are the shrimp and grits. Great bourbon list too! Fantastic patio and staff. Ask for Keishi as your waitress and you'll have a great time!

I've been a fan of Marketplace since it's opening. The chef, Dallas McGarity, brought his talent and vision from Z Fusion to open this beautiful dining experience and hasn't looked back since. With a mix of world flavors & southern style, the entrees are sure to be both varied & delicious on the changing menu. The service is never fast but this also provides a relaxing, serene setting for your meal. Entrees are typically very affordable and the ambiance make this a great spot for a date night or pre-theater meal.

I make sure that I come down from Ohio at least once a year to eat here!! Food is amazing. Dallas the Chef out does himself. Your tastebuds won't know what hit them. Your eyes will be exploring the beautiful scenery around you. If you are anywhere around you owe it to yourself to stop by. Seriously if you don't you will be missing out!

First time to this restaurant and it was great. Everybody at the table enjoyed dinner and we will diffidently be back. Service was great and not rushed.

This is a very nice place to eat, and is within easy walking distance to many places downtown including the brown hotel and theater. My husband and I always choose this place for special occasions (birthdays, anniversaries, etc.) and are never disappointed. It can be a little pricey though so be prepared to spend some money if going with more than two people.

This place is gorgeous inside. It's a nice location on 4th street, although that particular section is quiet. It's only a quick walk down to 4th Street Live if you want to hit that up after dinner. We started with ginger pear cocktails and the truffle fries. The truffle fries are skinny and piled into the biggest heap, and when they arrived I thought there was no way the 2 of us could eat all of those... and then they magically disappeared. Because they are AWESOME. We also started with brussels sprouts, which were just okay, a bit too sweet for me with the cherries and a sweet sauce. I went with the dinner special, which was sea bass with a curry sauce over grits, and my friend had the duck, also served over grits. The sea bass was very good, but a tiny bit undercooked for my taste. The center was pretty translucent and didn't really "flake" apart, which I think properly cooked fish should do. But the sauce and grits were great. I am not a huge fan of duck, but my friend really enjoyed hers. We skipped dessert but had a great bottle of pinot noir, called Mayhem and Mischief. It seemed appropriate :) All in all, I wouldn't say I was blown away by the meal, but would definitely like to return and give it another shot. They have shrimp and grits on the menu, which I ADORE, and will need to return to try them.

The service was superior, BUT we were served rare fried chicken breasts twice and then a dried out, over-cooked chicken breast for the third try! Under-cooked chicken is gross and dangerous. And, having a chef send repeated dishes which could lead to illness, and not even bother to come to our table- that is unacceptable and unimaginable. The ambiance is stark, lots of concrete blocks and a real absence of cohesion. BTW- we've never given a negative review!

What a hidden gem of awesomeness. Have to start with the atmosphere because it is incredible. Beautiful space, well spaces for that matter - this place is huge! Incredible back dining room with amazing fire pit, running water, hanging pieces, comfy but fancy tables and chairs. Would be great for a reception, bday dinner, but still laid back event. White baby grand in the next room with crazy couches and more casual night out atmosphere but still upscale, gorgeous blown glass and more. Reasonable prices on drinks, multiple beers on tap. Why doesn't everyone downtown go here for lunch? The most expensive thing on the menu was 11 bucks. I had a yummy tuna melt (but from sashimi grade tuna, not tuna fish and a salad with a citrusy, creamy house dressing that was incredible. They also bring your soda in the aluminum bottles and pour them in your glass. Nice touch. Also love the outdoor spaces and plan on utilizing them on a frequent basis once it warms up a bit. This restaurant/bar/venue is worth at least going and checking out. I think you'll be amazed at all that it entails.

I hadn't realized I had visited this establishment once before. Dining in the lounge. It was the Brussels sprouts and the ricotta Gnocchi that caught my attention. This time I ate at the bar. Food was amazing. There is a lounging area I could see myself visiting for happy hour with friends and the outdoor patio looks to be amazing unfortunately mother nature hates me this winter and again I leave MN to be greeted with snow and -1 temps. Alas. This is my last trip to Louisville I am really glad I made a trip here.
The food was really delicious. I had the short ribs and they were cooked perfect and came with great polenta. The server was friendly but if took a while for bread. We were only two of a few people in the restaurant but they were already put stuff which I thought was strange.

A business associate and I dined here this week. The food was excellent. He had Osso Bucco and I the scallops. Great choices. I also had an excellent spinach and bacon salad. Prices very reasonable. Nice ambiance. I'd go back for sure.
Stunning interior decor, delicious food (prices are much more reasonable at lunchtime), and excellent service.

Love the environment! I went there for the first time for a girls' night out and love it so much, then went second time with my fiance and the other couple as a double date! The first visit seemed to be more impressive. We sat out at the patio area when the weather was still warm, and each of us had couple drinks. We love the cocktail "pink princess" which is no longer on the menu, but we still got to order it! I love the "48 Hour Beef Shortribs". The restaurant was little bit crowded for a regular weekday night, since some kind of show going on at the theater right next, but it's still acceptable. When we went there the second time on a Monday night, the weather got kinda chilly and we sat inside. There wasn't any show going on in the theater right next, the restaurant was very quite and slow, making the environment more romantic. I ordered the "pink princess" like last time, but the bartender was different, so does the drink. The "Creekstone Farms Braised Beef" was pretty good, except the sauce being little bit too sour and too strong. The "Eye of Ribeye" my fiance had wasn't that good, with some kinda cheese & mushroom sauce on top totally covered up all the meat taste. The shortribs was as good as last time! I would recommend it, if you want to have a romantic night out. It's also nice to sit at the patio area to have a little chitchat/ girls' night out! It can be kinda pricy, with each entree around $20-30, plus $8-10 per cocktail.

WOW! I was visiting from D.C. and looked on yelp for a good restaurant and this was the one fo sure! I had the special which was this amazing, succulent chunk of sea bass over a bed of veggies that were marinated in some sort of sweet/tangy/terriyaki sauce with a side of their grits which were the crem de la crem! It was pricey but that was ok because I got my $$ worth. The ambiance is cool too. They managed to create an inimate setting within a spacious place so you can get the best of both. I am here on business and if I come back, I will definitely come back here.

We went here for New Year's Eve. It was very festive, and the live music, old period jazz was really enjoyable and romantic. The atmosphere is great and the whole theatre district, even in the dead of winter, is looking great with more to enjoy. The food was very, very good, I had their short ribs and we had the eggplant ricotta appetizer. Both extremely good. Service was excellent

We came for a weekend in Louisville and the Bourbon Tour. This was an adult group of 7. I chose The Marketplace based on reviews from this website. I made reservations for Fri. Eve. The first clue should have been that the week before Derby on a Fri. Evening the place was not busy. My husband & I were taking & treating our group to supper. I did order the wine. I chose the $24.00 bottle of Pino. I pointed to it and pronounced the name. The waiter acknowledged the choice and said the name. We had 2 bottles. The service was poor. The food was good. Several of our group ordered the filet & said it was great. Imagine my surprise when I was presented with the bill. The waiter had switched to $86.00 bottles of wine. I immediately talked to the manager to correct the waiter's mistake. I have never ordered that expensive wine in my life. The manager would not make this right. With 7 people having meals my bill was substantial. Why did the waiter feel a need to do a switch? What a scam!!!!! Then for the management to not make it right. I will NEVER go here and would NEVER recommend this place. I have never had this happen before. We are not complainers but this was outrageous! Go at your own risk and check you bills.

4 Stars Why am I "a fan"? This is why: yelp.com/biz_photos/ZWTT… Bourbon has been my drink for at least the last 6 months......and the closest place to my hotel here in Louisville that sells liquor for me to take home is Theater Square Marketplace. Service was friendly and helpful, I picked up a bottle of 103 proof Fighting C*ck Bourbon for $17.99 (tasted a lot better than I expected it to), some mini 50ml Blantons ($7.99 - sorry, no picture) and a mini 50ml Maker's ($3.99) to take back as souvenirs. They wrapped each bottle in bubble wrap for me to make sure it didn't break in my suitcase.....which secured the 4 star rating for them. yelp.com/biz_photos/ZWTT… yelp.com/biz_photos/ZWTT… Didn't get a chance to try their food since I was saving my appetite for my first time at White Castle, but the food here looks pretty good. I'm leaving it bookmarked and will stop by if I ever head back to Louisville.

Like Rahel K., I visited the oddly-named Theater Square Marketplace with a large party and sat, on a hot summer's night, near the outdoor waterfall. A lovely start, for sure. The service was superb, and the food equally so. Being far from the ocean, I went with the salmon, which was accompanied by a delectable lump of grits (my first time! yum!) and some glorious little veggies. Such fresh, fun cuisine in the middle of a flyover state (sorry Kentuckyans, I mean no offense) was unexpected and totally welcomed...and definitely contributed to a shift in my opinion about this state!

Quite the Performance of Food and Drink.... The name of the restaurant is more of the geographic location then a place to view dinner theater. This restaurant is located within walking distance of the Brown Theater, the Palace Theater, and the constant shows at Fourth Street. This place is a deli/cocktail bar/dessert bar/upscale dining/market experience. I have visited with large groups over 25 and intimate dinner with my boyfriend and always had attentive service. The space is open, posh, includes two bars, and a patio area. The missing star is strictly do to the quality of protein that I have experienced here. One time I visited and had a great cut of over cook steak. Another time I ordered the supposed sushi grade tuna and it was horrid and fishy. Yet another time I visited and my burger came out without seasoning and at the wrong temp. The presentation and other dishes that I have tasted have all been well prepared. It is a great stop for the tourists at the nearby hotels to get a nice vibe of Louisville. It is also a great place to go before or after any event around the area. Parking on the street can be a little tricky, but I recommend parking on Broadway in front of the parking lot and walking the extra three minutes to the restaurant.

The wine shop at Theater Square Marketplace is my go-to spot for alcoholic beverages. They have a good variety of liquor, beer, and wine choices, so it's a great place to grab a six-pack before a night relaxing with friends as well as a good place to get a nice bottle of wine to give as a present on a special occasion. Best of all: the staff is always friendly and helpful.

This is a beautiful dining, lounging, sipping, catching some cool live jazz music space. Delicious deserts greet visitors, nice lighting sets rich ambiance, charismatic but down to earth owners tend to matters. Reasonably priced drinks afford class like me access to space sophistique in my 'hood. For real this place and live jazz band chic and sultry three nights a week. If they had a dance floor they would have the better portion of my disposable income and my 5 star review.

I have been grocery shopping under the influence, but finally a place that serves me the drinks! The food selection in the bodega section of the space (for lack of a better overall theme) is really spectacular. They have intelligentsia coffee (what drew me down) and other local and imported goods. There is a locally owned bagel shop on the street side of the space. I am happy to see this downtown. The bar offered great drinks, no, they were incredible drinks, and a good looking menu. I will be going back to try the food. There is also a wine shop and deli involved, as well as a full service restaurant.

Me: Hello, I'd like to make a reservation for tonight. Market: Sure, for how many? Me: 23. Market: 23? Me: Yes, 23. Market: No problem. Would you like to sit indoors or outdoors? Me: Um, outdoors. Market: By the waterfall? Me: Um, sure! Market: What time would you like? Me: 8 o'clock? Market: No problem. We will see your party of 23 at 8 tonight. My very large family of 23 arrived to a picturesque courtyard with a large waterfall as a backdrop for dinner on a Friday night. The weather helped make the setting absolutely perfect. Two waiters were very attentive - albeit one seemed a little overwhelmed. Although my focus was mainly on the company, I thought the drinks were very refreshing. I started with the Pink Princess and finished with a bottle of Decoy. My better half's pork dish was much more tasty than my pan seared red fish. However, his pork with sweet potatoes seemed more appropriate for a fall dish than in the middle of August. Our bill was high at $200 for salads, two drinks, a bottle of middle-of-the-line Pinot, and two dishes; but knowing the size of our party and how accommodating they were to us I didn't complain. I think this is a good choice for either extra large parties or small, intimate parties looking for a great atmosphere in downtown Louisville.

Just came to Louisville to see what the city had to offer, and after making a couple stops at a few establishments, we landed at marketplace. It was empty because the Thunder event that was going on which we were confused about, but glad to hear they do good business. The food was amazing as we're the cocktails and beer selection. Pork belly on grits was too good for words, and the lamb flat bread was good as well. Next time I'm in Louisville I will definitely pay another visitor here.

Tasty food, great drink list and excellent service. My boyfriend had the cider Manhattan (rated best Manhattan by Esquire & Woodford Reserve) and open-faced roast beef sandwich. I'm wheat and dairy free and had an easy time finding lots on the menu, delicious grilled chicken and beet vegetables and a hand squeezed citrus margarita. HIGHLY recommend this place. Oddly themed slightly confusing decor, but live piano added a nice element to the ambiance.

I went there recently for a social event on a Wednesday and ordered a $4 wine. A woman who was standing next to me ordered a water. I gave the bartender a $5 bill and he gave me back 0.73 cents. I looked at him and asked why the short change and he said because my friend ordered a water! I told him I didn't know her and he shouldn't assume just because two people happen to be standing next to each other at the bar doesn't mean we know each other. I left afterwards because it soured my mood for the evening.

Atmosphere was great! Service was good. I was served a bad glass of wine which they quickly exchanged. I ordered the gnocchi. It wasn't true gnocchi and was a little overlooked, but still tasty. DH ordered the ribeye. He had some potatoes undercooked and the steak was really small. The food is decent but the menu is a little overpriced for the quality. I would go back for drinks and appetizers, atmosphere.

We loved everything about this place, and among the 8 of us I don't think there was a bad meal in the house! I had the lamb and onion flatbread, spinach salad, and sea scallops and everything was cooked to perfection. This is a place I would seek out if ever I'm in town again.

Not a bad after work meeting place. Drinks are prepared well even though a lil on the expensive side. I've only had the appetizers and enjoined each dish. I think Wednesday evenings the apps are half off...

Outstanding food and atmosphere. Fireplaces in the middle of the restaurant give the room a cozy feel and the big chairs and tables bring comfort. Food was fantastic as well. I had the pecan-crusted chicken stuffed with apples, kale, and sweet potatoes-- all freshly prepared and flavorful. They also serve lunch and have a fantastic apple & turkey sandwich. It's a great work lunch spot. Definitely check out this hidden gem!

(1)Mark G.
our first visit here was horrid. i ordered a red snapper special and upon tasting it came to the conclusion that it was bad. not bad as in "i don't like this", bad as in it was spoiled and probably would have made me or anyone else very sick had they gotten past the horrendous smell and eaten it. in all fairness, the management was very responsive to my complaint and took good care of us. that was the only reason we went back last night.
(1)Kelly N.

(4)Emily S.
(1)Nora D.

(5)Lauren H.

Go here.
(4)Diane R.
Descent food and drinks. The patio is awesome! My cucumber cocktail was a little sweet for my liking but the waitress brought me lemon so that helped. The salmon salad was good but I could have used more spinach and no bacon. Still descent. My friend loved his steak sandwich.
(4)Kristie T.
(4)Sara A.
(5)Marcia V.
The truffle fries are AMAZING. So are the bacon and spinach risotto fritters. The dinner menu is a little more pricy and I liked the two appetizers we had much more than the meal I ordered.
(4)Emily H.

(4)WhoAm E.

My last review was five stars and I still feel like Marketplace Restaurant is normally a five star restaurant. As a truthful Yelper I have to write about the last time I was here. It wasn't the best experience. Not bad but not as expected. For New Years Eve my friends and I decided to go somewhere nice for dinner before watching the ball drop. I suggested Marketplace because a couple can eat for under $100, it has a fancy atmosphere and the food is wonderful and well proportioned. I figured everyone would love it! I'll begin with the good part, my food! To start, I had a shrimp appetizer. The shrimp were huge and I enjoyed it overall. For dinner I had the lobster gnocchi with a tomato based sauce and LOVED it but I could have really used some bread :( Since the gnocchi didn't have any sides I tried to get one as an extra but was unable since it was New Years. For dessert I got the assorted truffles and had a fun time figuring out which liqueur and filling was it each. Everyone else liked their food but some didn't as much as me. People who just ate an entrée were still hungry and my friend who ordered the salmon said it was ok but nothing she couldn't make at home. She does love to cook! The atmosphere was still nice, except for a random drunk guy who kept yelling. I feel they should have asked him to leave. We sat in the back part of the restaurant so we couldn't hear the live music. Since we weren't by the fire places we were freezing the entire time. Most of us wore our jackets and used napkins to warm our legs. In the past I've felt like the service was perfect. It seemed the waiters and waitresses always knew what I needed. I've even been to a large rehearsal dinner and felt the same. On New Years the staff seemed rushed even though the restaurant wasn't jam packed. We asked for a picture and was told we could get one if she had time. Our waiter, while knowledgeable when I asked questions about the food, seemed new or very busy because he took forever for almost everything and was not as catering as staff had been in the past. I was sad my friends didn't get to see the full potential of the restaurant, especially on New Years Eve. I am still excited for the next time I go back to Marketplace because I know it will be a better experience! I still highly recommend it but wanted to give my New Yeas Eve review :)

The Mrs. and I went to the Marketplace for lunch. This was the Kentucky Theater a few decades ago. The interior is nice with two bars and numerous attractive eating spaces, it's dark inside, but what do you expect it was a theater. There is a lot of outside dining with many different areas and comfortable, attractive seating. Now to the food, I ordered the blue plate special a fried chicken breast with cabbage and steamed vegetables. The fried chicken was moist with a good crunch and the steamed vegetables complemented it well. The Mrs. had the spinach salad with salmon. A small portion of the salmon was undercooked for her, so I ate it. The salad was crisp with a nice dressing and pork belly to complement the salmon. I ordered truffle fries for the table $12 rather pricey, but there was enough for 4 people and they were very tasty. They should offer a half order of truffle fries for $6. We ate in a table near the bar, which has roll up garage doors so the air can be let in. The space is quite noisy with concrete floors and nothing to absorb the bouncing noise. They do not serve bread with entrées, a pet pieve of mine. We will definitely be back with an eye towards the blue plate special and probably spring for the pricey truffle fries. The service was professional and the restaurant was spotless,

(5)Tony M.

Lunch twice and dinner once, on huge & beautiful, very swank outdoor patio in the summer. Again last night (middle of winter), had dinner in dimly lit elegant interior back room that feels like a Florida double-wide patio room, but this one is half a football field large; 25 tables in solid black granite with comfortable, charming wicker seating. One regret only: Esquire Magazine voted their Manhattan as Best in the USA. Being an unabashedly dedicated and experienced Manhattan lover and Manhattan mixologist, I'm truly ashamed that I did not have the staying power to test that rating (but I WILL do so next time I visit, and I WILL update!!!) Two sided fireplace with a waterfall in the middle of the large room sets a nice chill mood, and again the food was amazing: short ribs over perfect polenta with a burgundy Demi-glacé, served with escarole, sautéed. All of the above was sublime; we split the meal and were both totally satisfied. We ordered a side of truffle fries for 6-7 bucks, they came out 5" high on patter; we ate a hundred of them and left 50 fries on the platter.... Clients range from 20 year-olds in suits and dresses on double dates to 8 person business dinners in nice dress to casual. Jeans and nice shirt are fine, add a sport coat to match the tony atmosphere if you have one with you. Bottom Line: This food is downright DEE-LISH! Marketplace is basically right next door to the Brown Hotel, great location. Drinks: very thoughtful wine list both bottle and glass, they also have 8-10 draft selections, all good to great choices from Palm to Louisville & Lexington local craft beers. The 8-person bar is a work of artistic design craftsmanship: gorgeous, backlit 4' x 4' exquisitely thin marble slabs mounted onto a semi-round bar at waist level, down to the floor, are stunning. I've studied, seen, designed, and built, a lot of restaurant and bar designs with my background but this was a first. The service is very competent and quick! I'LL BE BACK.

(4)Thomas H.

This is one of my favorite restaurants on the 4th street strip. I've dined here a dozen times now and haven't left disappointed yet! We started off with the cheese plate appetizer, which was very good, served up with crostini's, honey and a pepper jelly. Their fish specials are always a good choice. Last visit, I had the sea bass special. Roasted sea bass on nicely seasoned, pan sautéed, brussel sprouts. The fish was fresh and cooked to perfection! Overall, this restaurant has very good food at a reasonable price. There are tables inside and outside. The atmosphere is very comfortable and they often have live entertainment.

(1)John W.

(4)Travis M.
I love hanging out at the bar here. Can't beat 5 dollar burger night on Wednesdays. The drinks are a little over priced and so is the menu, but I always leave happy.
(4)Eric T.

(5)Kathy V.
(4)Amanda F.
(5)Renee L.
(4)Rachel S.
The service was awful and I was overcharged by $120 on our bill!!! Management did not handle it and I ended up having to pay it!!??? I would never recommend this restaurant.
(1)Mistye A.
(5)Rhonda G.
(5)Kelley Y.
(5)Josh L.
(4)April W.
(5)Liz J.
First time to this restaurant and it was great. Everybody at the table enjoyed dinner and we will diffidently be back. Service was great and not rushed.
(5)Joe R.
(5)Tara S.
(3)Benjamin Q.
(1)Rachel F.
(5)Kara W.
(4)Darryl R.
Walked here from the nearby Brown Hotel for dinner at 7:30pm on a Tuesday. I was the only person on the place (that should have been a clue). The BBQ pulled pork risotto fritter appetizer was excellent tasting. but the NY strip steak was full of fat and gristle. Steaks at Outback are better quality. The purple potato purée and greens underneath the steak were bland. I was so disappointed I skipped dessert. Maybe it was just a bad night, but I would advise ordering a steak here. There are a lot of good restaurants in town, I doubt I will come back to this one.
(2)Anthony F.

Valentines Day I want to start off by saying the ambience of this restaurant was perfect. From the lit candles on the dinner table to the lady in red singing jazz and playing the Piano. The romantic feeling was beyond perfect. Now to the not so good stuff. The restaurant is a little on the pricey side which I did not mind at all, but for the portions in the taste of the food I expected more. I feel that when you come to nice places such as The Market Place everything should be 100% not half. I had the short ribs, which were small, black (burnt) and had absolutely no seasoning. My fiancé had the fried chicken, we thought you can't go wrong with fried chicken, well it was wrong. We paid over twenty dollars for one small chicken breast, which was perfectly fine. Just wish there just a little more taste and did I mention or side dishes were lettuce unheard of. Also before coming to the restaurant I made a call first to see if I could get a little more detail on what to expect since this was my first time. The lady on the phone (I will not give her name away) new absolutely nothing. She didn't even know how to pronounce the food on the menu and when she finally did figure out how to pronounce something, she didn't know what it actually was. So I was a little disappointed that someone working here had absolutely no clue. I have been to places more expensive then this and the food was absolutely delicious so there's no reason why this restaurant can't get up to par for the prices they charge. However I will return to this restaurant strictly for the atmosphere and the bourbon for a nice lunch one day. JF
(3)Diana S.

Just great, the people, the food, wonderful experience. Try the fried chicken plate on Thursdays or the Fried Chicken salad anytime!

Fantastic! The food was delicious, the drinks were great, and the ambiance was remarkable. They had live music, but nothing so loud you couldn't enjoy dinner.
